ive got a spare diff now, with the hactual diffy bit broken so it doesnt share the power properly. but it would work perfectly if i took an arc welder to it and locked it up. how is it done tho? just literall weld up the mniddle bit that bit? or is there more of a technique to it? its a english (timken) diff btw

Yea, just weld the spider gears all together. (I think that's right

Clean all the oil out first before attempting. Try to protect the CROWN wheel and pinion from any weld spatter as this will cause them to jam up (removing them is better).
I used dissimilar metal rods when my atlas diff was welded up. Normal rods are okay but can make the weld a bit weak. You need to have quite a bit of current to get good penetration same if you want to use a mig.
I will try to get some pics of my atlas diff as I have an LSD in now so it just sits as a spare.

Surely it wont be good for the car if you want to go round corners? wouldnt you risk breaking drive shafts ect?

Thats my old one from my mk1 and has been sat in the back of a damp maestro for 2 1/2 year, but you get the idea. Atlas diffs are a bit easier to get to the spider gears than an english so you have to make sure you get a good weld on an english. I know one lad who had an mk2 escort with 160+ bhp that he used only for autotesting with a welded up english axle and the weld kept breaking so he ended up fitting an LSD. I ran mine in my MK1 for about 2 year and never had a problem. As long as you keep the wheels spinning its fine ;D Seriously though I wouldnt recommend a locked diff in an escort as a daily driver. They are a real headache when it comes to reversing or turning slowly. I think its worth with leaf springs as they wind up a bit. Great fun for straight line acceleration and sideways cornering though

thats the whole point, ive got a regular normal diff for everyday.
and i can change a diff in half an hour now the halfshafts arent completely stuck in place.
itll be for a rainy day (literally ;D ;D) + run it on cheapo rear tyres that i don't mind scrubbing out
neil - when you go round corners, you will go sideways whether you like it or not ;D ;D

my engish 4.4:1 was £300 second hand, that transformed my car! But if you don't want to spend that, the welded diff is an option. If your half shafts brake because you are using a welded diff, then they where curse word anyway. The only thing i would add to the above is, the rear of the car will not be as controlable as you think. It will either snap sideways with out warning or not want to turn in. If you want to have fun, then yea ok, becareful, but if you want to drive on tar fast, you amy struggle. here is a friend with a welded diff, he looks like he is struggerling. szomi - right click save target as

yeah, the 4.4's are megabucks, my 4.1 was worth a ton before i snapped it, and is still worth a pretty penny (as its only the diff thats gone, not the CWP and carrier)
and this way if i ever want to get a LSD i can always use this one at a later date.
