morning ladies and gentlemen, abit of advice needed! last nite i jumped in my 1.6 D reg laser, she was very very cold, checked the usual and the water in the cooling system was starting to ice up, but hadnt frozen solid, i ran the car for 10 mins idoling to let it warm up slowly. i then drove the 10 miles home, but after 6 or7 miles the temp gauge started 2 creep up,i pulled over,(it doesnt normaly get hot) sat and waited for half an hour for it to cool down, then continued on my way, but we were down to what felt like 3cylinders,i limped home (it was 2 in the morning!) and having come to the beast this morning, we still have the same issue. there is no oil in the water, and there is no noticable drop in water level, so I'm hoping it isnt a headgasket.
any other views? I'm gonna try a new set of plugs in it later, see if its just droped one. cold and older cars don't mix

initial problem sounds like insufficient antifreeze. Even a modern won't like that.
Its possible for a frozen coolant to crack an engine block. This will cause overheating, pressurised coolant and all manner of woes.
You'd be really unlucky for this to be the problem you have but it does happen.
On the bright side, this is the ideal oportunity to upgrade to a 2.0 if it is!

I once had a heater hose split. The coolant spraying out caused a misfire, worth checking

cheers, ive checked her over good and proper this morning and theres no obvious water leaks, ive managed to get it upto temperature this afternoon and it seems to be running alot better, its not perfect perhaps it was just the freezing cold and a crappy ford carb. either way itl get a good service this week and hopefully its not done any long term damage.

You Deffo shouldn't have ice in the coolant, get antifreeze in there quick. My pinto popped a rear core plug a few winters back and it was an engine out job! I lf you have the standard VV carb take it off, stamp on it and put it in your wheelie bin, then give your bin a quick kick for good measure. What you want on there is a 32/36 dgav carb from a 2 litre with either the auto water choke or preferably (but rare) manual choke. Piece of curse word to change, hour tops abd you'll have better winter starting, better starting in general, better fuel consumption and most importantly more power (and better noise!)
To reiterate, you need more antifreeze, now! Is it on 4 again?

Nice, well better carb may as well change your little leccy items whilst your at it seeing as its so cold and you had a missfire. At the least Id do points and condensor as old condensors don't seem to like the cold in my experience! Post pics when your done dude

It could be a stuck thermostat causing the overheating. Maybe the cold weather bound it up and it got stuck.
