YO!
This is one for the guys who rent small workshops etc.
The local retro contingent (about 4 of us!) are looking to rent some space for our tat.... what we need is a small workshop or barn (2-3 cars) with power & light + a bit of hardstanding for assorted other tat....
How would one go about finding such a place?
It's no good going to local property agents as they don't bother with anything so piffling small, nothing ever seems to come up in the local rags, and the only place nearby that rents out suitably sized units has a strict 'no cars' policy!
Really need somewhere to keep our assorted 'treasure' as wifes / girlfriends / mums are reaching their collective wits' ends!!
HELP!

Best thing ive heard from people looking to do this is to simply call round your local farm and try to charm said farmer. If not they're likely to know somewhere or could recomend somewhere else.

Have you tried the Council? Usually quite cheap, I was gonna do this when I was in Nottingham. Sometimes they do have a "no cars" policy though - however whether this applies to storing and mild tinkerage I'm not sure. A lot of the ones I went to see were declared "not suitable for motor trade businesses", which was fine because it isn't a motor trade operation...

I found one once. This was 14 years ago mind and it was £350 a month back then - plus business rates. And you have to pay business rates even if your not a business. That was big enough for 4 cars plus parking ourtside for 4 more.
Farmers are about the best option. A mate down south has a barn/workshop they share between 3 or 4 of them and theres space for like 20 cars there easy. They pay like £40 a month each and no business rates. The pay separate for the water and electric bu thats not much.
We looked for similar round here but all the barns are being turned into posh houses.

Farmers are the best bet.
I don't know if he still does, but I heard a rumor that Eric Gurney, over at Ashwell used to let people use his barns for such things when he wasn't keeping his grain in them.
He's the chap with the caravan site in Ashwell btw, Ashridge farm I think it is...

I think Guz has some kind of deal with a farmer. I could be wrong though - might be worth asking him when he next surfaces round here

Farms are probably the best option but more and more farmers are not keen on renting buildings to store/work on cars due to fire risk etc.

Mine is through a bloke who looks like an extra from Snatch, makes concrete lintels and likes guns. I pay no rates, minimal rent on an adhoc basis and thank Zeus's beard everytime I turn up and all my stuff is still there. And it took me a year to find that... In short good luck, ask everybody, and look over every fence and hedge for empty barns garages etc, private individuals are a more likely bet, maybe a disused barn in a field you could secure for them and use a gennie for power, water butt for err, water... Unfortunately more and more this sort of thing is frowned on.

Well initial results are encouraging
First farmer we phoned said he has space to rent until august at least... we have to ring back later to speak to his one though....
Also we are chasing the possibility of the barn which that datsun & opel are currently living in, although i expect that it would necessitate taking the whole site which may be very expensive...

Word of mouth is the only way i ever hear of them.
I'm lucky that i don't have to rent a workshop but alot of my mates do. They rent from local farmers. A 2 car workshop with electric on a pay as you go meter costs them £110 a month! and then if they want to park a car outsie for more than a day or 2 they have to pay for that too. One of the farmers also rents out containers for storage which is useful! Madness!

yeah, my barn holds 4 cars and is a tenner a week.... if u go to the local farmer offering cash they will be far cheaper... and make it clear that it will not be a security risk

If it falls through I can put you in touch with another farmer near Clowne who rents units, no problem with cars, tinkerage or even complete strip downs. A number of his units are used by people running bodyshops or even general mechanicing. Nice and quite and laid atmosphere generally

That's cheap. I had a two car unit when I lived down in Bournemouth which used to cost me £300 a month (including rates). That included parking for two cars in the yard too. It's really helpful if you have parking in the yard.
Now I have a 570sq ft workshop here at home and unlimitred parking hehe ;D
