with around 3 weeks to go until rtts, ive actually motivated myself to do the jobs on the sec. started with an oil change and a check on the plugs, which were ok. next up bodged up the blowing exhaust, to quieten it down until i can get a new section fitted. then the back wheel came off to find out what the sqeaking noise is and see why it has cable ties holding something on. the backing plate has been bent back and the ties are stopping it from flapping about, so nothing to worry about there. next job was to take the caliper off, give it a quick clean and copperslip and check the hand brake shoes inside the disc. this is where i fell down.needed a short reach 19mm to get the bolts out. could i find one that wasnt smashed?....could i heck. and you cant get a long reach on the ratchet in. couldnt get a spanner in properly either. i think i need to invest in some new tools.

Bah! I hate that - I'm forever smashing sockets, but I see it as a kind of "natural selection" process - once the sh!te ones fail I just replace it with a better one. With any luck in a couple of years I'll have a half-decent quality set of tools. ;D Glad those cable ties weren't holding anything more serious than a splash plate! A 19mm short socket will come in handy again though - and you'll be able to torque up the bolts when you're re-assembling

i hate curse word tools. it's only recently i've started doing 'proper' work on cars and i always seem to cause myself an injury when a tool of some kind decides it's had enough. mangled my finger really badly removing the charger from the polo when a 13mm socket shattered, and on my new polo i was trying to take the thermostat housing off, the allen key sheared and my hand went full-force into the nice sharp edging on the fan housing. ow

crummy tools suck the fat one till its bright red.
I've just bought a 3/4" drive breaker bar to get the crankshaft pulley off the Argenta, supposedly its 250lb/ft torque on the nut, the fuggin engine only produces 150lb/ft or something. I'm expecting to at least smash a load of teeth off the flywheel when I try and 'lock' it with a wobbly screwdriver or something.

mr curse word sir.
try and shock the bolts out, instead of pulling them.
if that makes sense. like sharp tugging on the bar.
it doesnt give the engine enough inertia to turn.....
kinda cant put it in words - but thats how i do them.
shouldnt be too tight anyways, mine are only torqued to 22nm or something

When I was removing the crank pulley bolt on my discovery, they are torqued to 350 NM with loctite 641. I had to make up a tool to lock the crank damper against a chassis rail and use a 3/4" breaker bar with a 6 foot length of scaffolding tube and I was hanging off the end of it to get it to budge.
