I know there are quite a few guys and possibly girls on here who know their IVA's and other tests inside out. So maybe I am onto something here, or maybe not. Having just seen the ad from MrKiev in the FS&W pages, it re-ignited something I have thought of for years. Turning a Jeep Cherokee into a pickup truck. What does the current legislation say about hacking the back off one of these and making a pickup out of it? I do not know, but would suspect that as with many moderns, this will be monocoque, which will probably plums the whole plan from the outset. Pic of said Jeep. Some pics from GOOGLE. Oh, and a modern, just for kicks.

From what I know, (which isn't much!) it will be possible in theory, it's a points based system now, I think you start with 25 points and are deducted points for mods such as change of engine, sus, gearbox ect but the biggest points loss (and therefore hardest to pass) is major body mods.
So in theory, if you did your major body mod (pickup conv) but left everything else stock, it should pass.......but don't quote me on that!
But if it is a separate chassis, easy peasy, body mods are aloud, and chassis mods are aloud but only if they are adding extra body mounting points and adding strengthening beams/X members..............I think!

Yes they're monocoque, so the conversion would be tricky, both legally and technically.

Right.....
Just answered my own question I believe.
The Jeep Cherokee (XJ) is a unibody (monocoque) compact SUV. It shared the name of the original full-size SJ model, but without a body-on-frame chassis, it set the stage for the modern SUV. Its innovative appearance and sales popularity spawned important imitators as other automakers began to notice that this model began replacing regular cars.[3] It was built in Toledo, Ohio in the United States in Beijing , China and Valencia, Venezuela . The XJ platform provided the mechanical basis for the MJ-series Jeep Comanche pick-up.

A modified monococque would need to go through BIVA to be put back on the road legally. However when modified into a pick up it moves it to a different class where there isn't a test, any other form of modded monococque would use the Amateur Built class of BIVA. The link in my last post explains the ins and outs of why a pick up ( made from a modified monococque) can't be tested.

The good news is that ebay is littered with 4 x 4 chassis's of a similar wheelbase and strong enough to carry the body with a fully loaded bed. Would also be a lot cheaper way of doing it even if there was a test available for this class of conversion. So..... Get to it.... cos I wanna see one of these on the build boards soon! Excellent idea!

Or thinking laterally, import a pick-up from the States with sound body but knackered running gear and swap your running gear into it. the car itself shouldn't cost too much to buy and it would all come down to import costs v. build costs.

That seems quite popular in the states, also in the hill/ravine climbing scene, chop its asss and close up, then abuse.

We just don't value our nuns and kittens as much as the psychos running your Great People's UK Beaver Politburo. Hell, not even the people who gave the world politburos care about politburos any more.... ;D

Hell, not even the people who gave the world politburos care about politburos any more.... ;D Politburos OR cars.... According to the Russian guy I spent some time in Moscow with recently.... there are virtually no rules regarding modified motors whatsoever in Russia. He also told me that up until a few years back you could insure a Ferrari for the same price as a Lada.
