Yeah, I doubt that when Street Machine or Popular Classics or Jallopy went they were posting "good riddance" on the Max Power forum.
Max Power was like CC was back in the day. Boobs and bad language and "attitude". Its just a different generation's take on what car to base it on, what music to listen to while driving it, etc.
A lot more effort went/goes into a lot of Max Power type cars than sloshing paint stripper and wee over the bonnet of some old banger and rattle can the rest in black...

oh and - with the "someone else will buy the name and relaunch" thing - they are keeping the name for web and some one-off special events and stuff. According to the site linked up earlier in the thread.

I think you could look at it as Max Power on Paper is gone,.. maybe they are throwing all in with the web side of things + events. It would seem a reasonable strategy, their target demographic is the right age group and technologically savvy, the name is big enough to make a shot at is a website only endevour. I'll be interested to see if they go paywall (bad choice) or some kind of freemium service (good choice).

I don't see any gloating around here? I just see some comments about the situation... Its hardly HAHAHAHA they lost there jobs and thank god its gone is it? ![::)](//storage.proboards.com/forum/images/smiley/eyesroll.png) That's pretty much exactly what was being said, on Pg 1. I find it sad that some people are out of work. I find it sad that a group of car enthusiasts have lost their magazine. I find it sad that another group of car enthusiasts are gloating about it. I totally agree, Dave.

I have 5 volumes of fast car from the end of 1988 to the start of 1992. They still make good reading, and are a good point of reference for the type of vehicle that the people on this site obviously enjoy.
Bear in mind, the youngsters these days are being quoted four figures to insure some thing old and basic, they've got no chance of modding anything ( I don't believe the high cost of insurance is any thing to do with young drivers being a risk - it is to do with the credit culture legacy of the last government - when everything was slapped on a visa card).
I used to buy street machine, another good mag, alas it could'nt sell enough copies. I stopped buying practical classics simply because I think it lacked content and had too many ads.
Unfortunately, max power wont be the last.

Along with the like of redline it sparked an interest in me and although at the time I was rolling in a talbot horizon (with ahem oakley graphics). I alwys remember it as part of my my car journey. Fibre glass an 7 spoke kahns may yet be the new retro gold must haves. I note even on this forum there is some love abet tougue in check for TSW venams. Some where in my head there is the want to build the Jetta gti I could never afford when I had it ( mine was very was Rat before the phrase was coined it was like that because I was poor and liked the fact it was Fast as funk and handled bettter than the golf). All 17 " rims rolled arches and body kit with neons underneth. one day these will be built as RETRO RIDES.

Ive only ever bought,i think two mp`s.And to be honest it was only to look at he chav pussy. But its sad to see it gone.I like magazines and the whole going into town to wh smiths and buying them, far better than the interwebz. But the whole modifying scene is dying on its feet.New drivers cant afford to insure a std car never mind one thats being modded. Most of the new drivers ive spoke to of late don't even understand why you`d want to top your own rad water up,they`ve being brought up in a totally different society to most of us.All the new regs thats being sneaked in by vosa/dvla/eu wont help either as it`ll be like hitting your head against a brick wall to even change your own wheel.

Let's keep the negativity out of this thread please. Recent issues of Max Power have had a fair smattering of good cars in as well as the usual kitted stuff. Historically, Max Power was the enemy of us Street Machiners, but then I also remember when MK1 and 2 Escorts were the enemy too (boy racers!). Times change, things move on.

I don't think that 'bad attitude' magazines like Max Power did the hobby of modifying cars any favours and it's probably better for the whole movement that it's bitten the dust.

I don't think that 'bad attitude' magazines like Max Power did the hobby of modifying cars any favours and it's probably better for the whole movement that it's bitten the dust. The whole concept of DIY modding was started by rodders in the '50s, and they had far more 'bad attitude' associated with them (rightly or wrongly) than modern kroozers.

Good point. Talk to my Mum and Dad (mid 50s), and the T-bucket style Hot Rods are just for Hells Angels who couldn't balance on a bike. ![:D](//storage.proboards.com/forum/images/smiley/grin.png) I think with every ''Scene'', theres the stereotype, and truth. Its down to the individual to decide if they want to see what they are told to see, or look beyond at what its really all about.

i find it sad that a certain people on here are gloating that maxy p has died and people will be out of work at this very uncertain times but the fact that it has died is down to changing attitudes the same reasons that the great(as some think it was I'm not one of them) street machine and custom car died those who read max did so because they liked the content i used to buy revs, max power and retro cars i stopped buying max as the cars featured were no longer affordable cars i stopped buy revs because it got too much like fast car and retro just disapeared from the shelves as for some one saying about teaching people how to modify properly isnt it a matter of taste? i personaly think some of the cars on here are hiddious but its down to the owners taste the "stick on" halfords look is the owners choice if my veiws and opinions make me a unpopular person on this forum so be it I'm not here to upset people I'm here to share a mutral passion in older interesting cars thats all I'm now off my soap box

Its a sad but no surprising development. Paper media as said is a dying industry in many respects. The loss of Max Power is indeed a loss. Yes it was sometimes tasteless, tacky and teeny but alot of people grew up reading it and it got alot of people into cars more. I grew up reading it in my teens after getting bored with Popular Classics, but was never allowed to leave it around due to the amount of innapropriate photos in it, thus i converted to Revs. When that went down hill i went back to Max Power. I guess I'll never fulfill my dream of getting my Fiesta featured in it then ![:(](//storage.proboards.com/forum/images/smiley/sad.png) ![](http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v213/skinnylew/Car-1Feb04.jpg) ![](http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v213/skinnylew/DSCN3771.jpg)

OK, where do we get the assumption that everybody who modifies a late model car is a new driver who can't afford this or that? Nothing like a good stereotype. I know/have known plenty of people into the "wrong" cars and these are guys in their 20s, 30s and yeah, 40s.
There is quite a demographic who modify late stuff.
I went to an event last week up in the BT Tower which had a keynote speaker who is CIO of Telegraph Group, talkign about the technology being used in new media developments for traditional newspapers and the like. Interesting stuff. They are making the business model up as they go along though! Unchartered teretory. It was actually quite inspirational, if you get to see him present, he's really rather good. Better than the guy from Google anyway. Bah!

It's sad that it's gone, but it never "grew up" (or maybe it didn't get time to) like Custom Car, Street Machine etc. The cruise reports used to annoy the hell out of me (and still do in Fast Car) - "Can't believe the pigs broke up the cruise because somebody was doing donuts with a crowd of people as the crash barrier") and condoning people to drive like dicks (crash of the month etc).
Still got my old Hot Rod Gazette "Say no to Lax Power" stickers might have to dig em out lol.

I remember a Euronats report in CC where they were lauding up guys who'd all done burnouts on the deck of the cross chanel ferry. Including one hero who managed to spin donuts on the deck in a V6'd Ford Thames. That has to be 25 years ago and I remember it. I was impressionable.
Like you say CC grew up. Probably because the same people read it now as read it in 1985.
