Hi all, after a dabble with the XJS i got an offer i couldnt refuse and did a deal with a 1971 triumph herald 13/60. As you would expect from a 40 year old,its a bit tired. The body is rough up close and the engine is tired but both will be getting sorted in the near future Paul ;D

it looks clean in the pics but up close there is more filler than steel. It is having an engine/box swap as well as modding the rear axle and smartening the bodywork

Looks alright that does, is your rear axle mod going to be a swing spring conversion?

Its already got the swing spring setup but i am looking at ways of beefing it up to take something like a sierra diff and some sort of wishbone setup so the wheels don't tuck under so easy? don't know how yet though???

The standard diff will take a fair bit of abuse before it falls to pieces, the Spitfire 3.63 ratio is said to be one of the strongest. I think Ray? has helped prove this with his rotary engined Herald, I am also aware of a V8 engined Spitfire with a standard diff. The tuck under problem really isn't as bad as some make out, like many people I had done many thousands of miles in a Triumph with a swing spring and never had any problems. There are a number of racers out there also who have used swing spring, though a few have converted to a CV version of the rotoflex drive system as used on some the Vitesse and GT6 cars. Here's the setup used on my GT6

I have thought of using a gt6 type rear end(with bottom wishbone).Just because i cant get my head round the fact that the halfshaft IS the wish bone,it just doesnt seem safe .Maybe will stick with the standard diff and worry about it if and when it goes bang? The engine that is coming out And the one that will be going in ;D Paul ;D

Millions of Beetles can't be wrong! Although I must say that I much prefer the strength of the Beetle universal joints to the Triumph's rubber doughnuts.

Hi Paul,
Looking good, Wish my herald was in half as good nick. Sump line on the vauxhall lump looks good for going in the herald. I've stuck with the swing spring and 1500 spitfire diff. It does work....but everything needs to be in good condition. I spoke to a vittesse racer at Canley classics who was really really helpful.

Thanks Alex, don't be decieved by the photos. It is nowhere near as nice in the flesh as it looks in the pictures. It has had a rough skim over with filler and a crappy paintjob Good to see a few heralds on here undergoing various conversions .Will be interesting to see them all finished Paul
