It shouldnt peel off provided you key up the old paint first. I'm no paint man but i'd say go over it with some 360 first. It took me about 10 half litre cans to get one almost decent coat on the cortina, so seeing as your cars black already and about half the size 10 should be about right.
Halfords or any motor factors will have satin black in stock. Just be prepard to have a very stiff finger for a few days ;D.

poundland sell satin black ;D youd wanna key it with something a bit less abrasive than 360, try a 600 or an 800. we used to prep shells with 1200 at the bodyshop i worked at, but for a ratty satin job itd be easier to key with soemthing lower. or use scotch cloth . if you have access to the spraying tools itd be a lot cheaper to buy some propaaa paint - i paid £25 for 2.5l metalic strato silver and ive still got about a litre left, itd be pennies for some matt paint

Why not just gently flat it back with 1500 & 2000 W&D. Should give a nice matt finish, assuming you didn;t spray it enamel.

Now in my usual "helpful" fashion I'd say thats either an enamel base or acrylic paint. Best thing to do is try an inconspicuous spot first and gently give it a go with some 1500 grit wet & dry (used wet and soapy). If it matts off to a nice suedy finish its acrylic and it it goes white and scratchy or doesn't sand back at all its enamel.
If its enamel you need to apply a barcoat before spraying with celly or 1K really.
