Wanted to get some advice before I do something which may attract unwanted attention from the law. I am thinking of using the area where my front plate is situated as an extra radiator grille, then attach the individual characters to the grille, instead of having a plate. The grille will be black, characters silver, as allowed for my car. I've seen it done on a few sports cars with nowhere to mount a plate, but not sure it will be okay on the Triumph?

60s elans you see the letters in the grille so yes older cars get away with smaller etc anyway......

Neighbour has an Elan +2 and suffered overheating when he first bought it until he realised that the previous owner had used a normal number plate instead of just the letters on the grill. Once changed the overheating ceased so proves they don't restrict airflow much.

call me a pessimist but with obvious stuff like number plates nowadays its best to play it safe.

with my spitfire i just painted it on the black plastic splitter. make some negatives with some stickback plastic as templates and just paint it on looks good and you have nothing blocking airways.

I like this bit Traditional number plates fitted to vehicles manufactured before 1 January 1973 are not required to display the mandatory character font, but the characters must be easy to read.

Great Idea and I'd do it if that was my car - just not sure how easy the letters are to get hold of

I've painted a numberplate onto the front of a 1972 mini before. We just used a cereal box for a template and masking tape! ha

you could spray the grill white then use stick on number plate letters to mask it off and spray it black, peel the letters off and you got white on black plates.

Good news then, thanks Guys. Now just to decide which way to do it. My front valance is fibreglass so cutting it will be fine. Individual letters can be bought from Framptons. Now just to decide whether to use the same type of grille as the original, or go for a black mesh type that I could spray letters on. Cheers Guys, I knew RR would sort me out

Used to have one on the bonnet of a Maxi, which more or less pointed skywards. No problems at all. As long as it displays as silver/white on black I don't see a problem.

Personally I just don't run a front plate, it's in the car as it just fell off.

Personally I just don't run a front plate, it's in the car as it just fell off. On a slight tangent, can anyone confirm/deny that the number plate regs are being amended so that you can't have a plate above the bottom line of the glass. This is meant to be because of the show boys that drive on the road with the plate on the dash (to make the front of the car less cluttered) and it isn't easily read?

I don't believe you could have a number plate under the glass anyway. Regardless, the ANPR police won't like number plates that are hard to read or of the wrong font.
