Hi ive just destroyed the gearbox in my 1989 Scirocco Scala 1.8i. The linkage is worn and I hit 1st instead of 3rd, I think the box was on its way out anyway. Ive seen some Scirocco gearboxes on eBay but there miles away. There is still some Golfs MK2s and loads of mk3s in a great scrapyard that I use. Golf boxes look the same but I don,t want to spend time removing one to find out that it don,t fit. Has anyone ever put a Golf box in a Scirocco? Thanks Neil

In a word yes. As long as it's off an 8v 'big block'. So that's any of the 8v engines which lean backwards in the bay.
I stuck a late mk2 golf engine and box into my Scirocco. Fitted easily. Just keep the Scirocco linkage, mounts and other bits, and it should go on easily enough. In fact the gear box code was exactly the same on the golf one as the original Scirocco one.
I believe a 16V one will fit, but you'll need to swap the clutch too as the in-put shaft is a different size.
I'm not too clued up on mk3's, so can't say for sure with them, I know they did some later/higher spec ones with hydraulic clutch's and cable shift in some of them, which would not fit, but I'm not sure on the earlier ones.

If the linkage is worn, replace that otherwise you'll have the same problem with the new box. You can get a kit for £30 or so.

What they said - do the complete kit and you'll be amazed at the transformation. Wierdly all Mk2 Roccos have a strange curved path across the gate but that's natural.

Although you can swap these over from your old box if you end up with the wrong ones. There's a cir-clip which needs removing, then they just pop out. Although my 88 Scala had the 100mm flanges which match up to a mk2 golf box anyway, so I'd imagine yours will be the same. I'm not sure about the linkage, although GSF are always the first place to try for that sort of thing. I had a TSR stainless linkage on mine which was nice. This one

Hi them TSR linkages look good at £40, Il phone the scrapyard I use tomorrow and see if they have any 1.6 or 1.8 MK2s in. I'm not sure about MK3 boxes I know that most have clutch cables but not sure about the linkage. Thanks
