Hi, The next major thing will be exhaust to make sure the 3 door gets to CARS insted of the teenager Sapph! Looked at a lot of options, fabricated tube manifolds costing around £600 and Fabricated single pipe mild steel exhaust looking at £300 I'm getting talked into keeping my cast manifolds which sweep back collecting 4 on each side. I believe these are the ones to have if cast is the choice. Keeping with cast, should see less heat in the bay and the manifolds lasting for many years rather than getting tired like tubed jobbies. At £600 i don't want em wearing out. So based on keeping the decent casties and fabricating down tubes 2 into 1 (and saving a small packet);which single pipes to look at? What brands? and what model sierra would best suit the DIY down pipes meeting at transission? (like 2.8V6 or cossie, which comes witha turbo pipe or something, or a standard 2.0) Any ideas, even just good brands and companies is a start. or comments on cast vs tubed manifold/headers...

My initial thoughts would be an XR4i system, as it could be (in theory) adapted to hook up to the manifolds on your V8. My brother used Ashley exhausts on his Mk3 Escort - they're good value by the looks of them although he'll be able to offer a more informed opinion on them

Cheers, I'll have to have a look at what my two look like underneath. I've heard mixed stuff about ashleys build quality. Got an email off the man at Ashley offering up a 2.5inch cossie one seemed quite helpful. I could get one made up at the garage using a cossie silencer, these apparently are £90 alone! I also got looking at Flowmaster silencesr to build into a DIY system, i'm not sure how much these are or if they'd be too noisy though. Damn i'm confused! ;D

Ashley are good for price but not always good for fit! I think a company called Magnum Engineering used to make manifolds or downpipes for hooking up Rover 3.5 and Ford 302ci V8s to standard XR4i exhausts - might be worth checking out. XR4i would be my first port of call when looking at standard stuff. (Will PM you later about the Sapphire suspension! Just noticed your unread message. ) Edit: hopefully I can get some pics of my (Pinto) Ashley system on the car at the weekend if it'll help!

Dare I say, try and make some yourself? Random bends and lengths are all available to buy, you can take a template of the manifold flange down to a local CNC shop in cardboard and get them to replicate it... There's some good literature available on the subject ie speccing bore sizes etc and if you're transplanting the engine yourself, then I reckon you must be up to the job mechanically? As for Ashley, not a great fit, but the for the price I'd rather spend an extra hour pushing and bending a system to fit than a couple of hundred quid extra for a competitors system. Plus a lot of road rallyists etc use them, so you know they're strong when pushed around.

Good point, I'm sure you can buy flanges off the shelf for Rover V8s. I think Demon Tweeks do them.... As for Ashley, not a great fit, but the for the price I'd rather spend an extra hour pushing and bending a system to fit than a couple of hundred quid extra for a competitors system. Plus a lot of road rallyists etc use them, so you know they're strong when pushed around. Very true! Me and my bro both have Ashley systems (mine on a Pinto Sierra, his on a DOHC), and price-wise there isn't a realistic alternative. They work well once they're on, and I've never known an OE system to fit 100% first time either!

Fantastic points there, hadn't considered how the XR8 does. The previous owners (who is a good mechanic) plan was to but a cossie back box on and build his own system, so it looks quite stock, this is still an option. but i'd want a more custom look. Any back box brands i should look at? So i could easily go that route with his help. For now using the cast manifolds would save a few quid.
I will consider the ashley system too, it is good value and they do seem related to the motorsport side of things which is good.

The Burton catalogue has lots of different brands of exhausts - both complete systems and back-box only. They also do a good selection of exhaust sections in various bores and materials. www.burtonpower.comGood call on the XR8 - It's a long shot but it could be possible that Ford dealers can get an XR8 system from S.A.... that said, a more probable outcome would be a vacant expression and "what's a Sierra, mate?" If you really wanna save money I've seen zorst bends made out of straight section pipe, welded up in segments. You can also buy exhaust baffling so you can make your own silencers! ;D

I followed a saxo the other day that had six exhausts at the back. Seems the way to go. Sierra is a bigger car so I'd guess you'd be looking at maybe 10 exhausts.

Some good info there benzboy, cheers. XR8 system is defo summat i'm looking into, like if theres an aftermarket one available somewhere. i think i found one before if its the right xr8, unless theres a randomaussie ford labelled as an xr8, hmmm anyway.
10 exhausts sounds about right apart from it would cost £2000 even from Ashley! ;D
