whilst in the local 'breakers' last week with topghia, we walked around a corner in the yard to find a Subaru xt. we both instantly recognized it, altho i don't know how, as not one panel was free from dents, (last time we saw this car it was straight, in good nick. although could have done with a polish and the only known problem was a couple flat tires and a flat battery!) how do cool cars like this end up like it?? apart from the dents, and being covered in mud it still looks complete, but no idea if it still runs. maybe somebody will be able to use anything from it, and let it not be such a waste. pm me for breakers address

I think these things have an LSD in the rear axle which can be used in the Datsun IRS set-up (510s etc). Not 100% sure, someone like Ratdat or Antdat would probably know better than me.
Useful engine for an air-cooled VW swap?
Shame to hear it's been scrapped, truly bizarre car.

Thats a real shame. I suppose the mental styling equals complicated/non DIY friendly mechanics, which is why such a car ends up in the scrappy. I've seen the equally bizarre SVX in a scrappy with little more than industrial amounts of bird poo on the windscreen....

I saw a nice SVX at the shops the other day, thankfully still in daily use by the looks of it. What a weird car!

I love the XT! But I love the SVX more! Chronic depreciation on those things - £127.50 per mile as it was driven away from the showroom. Surely they'll have to start appreciating soon? I don't think I've ever seen one, and I've only ever seen a couple of XTs. Quality J-quirkiness!

I saw one of these about 2 years ago in a scrappie near Kettering. One of the guys who worked there scrapped it, cos some local kids smashed some of the windows, and he could not find anywhere to get replacments without paying a fortune to get some imported. It ran and everything, offered it to us for £150, but I was saving to go to uni so had to decline.
Nasty things on the inside IMO, but certainly different to most things on the roads.

even I cant muster much enthusiasm for those, the styling is just too horrific. Much prefer a Subaru 1800 estate, B-reg.

i take it that it was the metallic green one, a real shame becuase it was a very clean car that had a lot of time money and effort on it in its day damn i hope my new house comes with a huge garden.

I could get on with an XT. The first time I heard of one was when I had one in a pack of Top Trumps as a kid. The SVX has to be a future classic - just look at it! ;D
