a little report on the brown t-bag I'm startring to lose my enthusiasm again
started well enough with the drivers A post and front edge of the sill, when cut out they look like this
a little welding later it looked like this
it only rotted out badly because the previous welder bodged a bit of tin over the grot, instead of removing it . so I started to strip the n/s front sill/ a post down, and, like the o/s, the bodger had left the rot in. thius time the vibration of the car (I presume) had shaken the rust down the length of the sill, nessecitating some 3 1/2 feet of steel welding in . so I ordered a sill (came today ), but I'd liked to of stuck a small peice in after removing a minor piece of grot, like the b*st*rd should have done before me.
it gets worse. unable to do the sill, I ventured round to the front valance, as I'd seen some bubbles there. grinding back the drivers side revealed this
some inginuity and my trusty welding steed had it solid and ready for a light skim of filler for shape. I was not going to buy a valance as these only come with a front panel outer skin, which is £330 (pattern) and £560 (genuine) more than I paid for the car! any hows, the drivers side looks like this
now, I start to grind of the blisters in the passenger side. they looked minor compared to the other side, my how looks can be deceptive! the n/s has been skillfully crafted from p38! look at the thickness!
all ground off, it looks like the welder has much more to do before it gets a holiday to its summer retreat (the spare room). Its like someone set wire netting seed
on a better note, I've been comparing heads. I have found that the 121ti (2002 tii) head has the biggest standard 02 valves, but the 318i e30 has a 1mm bigger inlet valve AND has the advantage of being open chambered, thus it might not pink like a tii, even though its camber volume is the same. some chamber pics, first the 121ti
the 318i
makes me happy anyway. goes a small way to make up for the bodger of rust. if I find him, I'm gonna tip a bag of grinding dust down his y-fronts grrr
