I've seen a Saab 9000 (non-turbo) around for £not much, and I'm deliberating whether to get it or not. It's got tax and test, and sounds pretty straight (not seen it yet though) I do quite like them, but know nothing about them. Are they any good? Or should I just stick with the Volvo? Opinions / info gratefully received

Probably less thirsty than the Volvo. But alot more 'gubbins' to go wrong... I think that you should stop looking at these lovely cheap cruisers. And be made to drive something truly VILE. Like a reliant robin. Maybe then we'll see the Benz done this decade. ;D ;D ;D Automotive purgatory as a tool for motivation.

Hehehe, point taken Nick! Yes the Merc project has gone on long enough... maybe I ought to save my money and buy a knackered V8 S-Class instead and get the transplanting under way ;D

That's the kinda thing! But I reckon my V8 oop north needs less work than that one. I'm keeping my eyes peeled for a car locally, preferably with the later all-alloy blocks (380, 420 and 500). That way I can just take it over to the workshop (when I get it) and strip it down. Plan B is a mercy mission up north to get my engine. I'll need to go up there to get the turbo and fuel system stuff anyway.
It's true though, maybe I ought to get something more uncomfortable, then it'd spur me on! I've been offered a Mk1 Golf too - I'm REALLY tempted by that.... Argh! Too many cars!

I had a 1991 Saab 9000 with some letters after it. It was the 2.0 16V non-turbo. It had 180K on it when I sold it, can't remember the miles when I got it. Gave it one sevrcie the time I had it, all parts were cheap from the factors. Never gave a moment of trouble. It drove nice, it rode nice and it was mint inside and out except one bleb on one wheelarch and the rear "decor panel" was fading. I paid £170 for her and sold her for £375. We parted on good terms!
It did about 28 MPG the whole time (according to the onboard computer). Its not a fast car because its heavy and its FWD. But as a daily hack, cruiser, etc. its a superb buy. The load bay is cavernous too.
I bought it because it was cheaper than 2 weekends of Transit van hire! Its stayed for the remains of the tax it had when I got it plus one disc I bought for it.
Two thumbs up.

We had a 9000 for about 8 years. Bought it from auction with a grumbly wheel bearing and then driven for 110,000 miles, having 180,000 on the clock. Never needed anything barring tyres and consumables. It even looked new on the outside at the end of the day, only one tiny spot of rust and everything else was mint. Even the interior held up well, it was a manual one. It was quite slow mind Lol - Same as above ;D However, it's fate was not nice. We sold it at auction, but the V5 never got switched over - we had about 20 parking fines, 3 speeding tickets and various other letters from the London area. Eventually it got parked up somewhere, and they threatened to crush it - we told them to feel free and dispose of the damned thing! Was that light blue/green colour...loved it mind

I'd say yes, I've always had a soft spot for eighties Saabs. Add the regulation nato matt green, some nice cross spoke wheels and dumpage. They're a bit like the land-crab of today, rather unloved.
Maybe even take a gamble and find yourself an old Fiat Croma!
Actually there are a whole abundance of unloved budget non german cruisers out there to choose from. We've never had it so good.

A 9000 Eco model is what you want. The 2.3 ECO has an intercooler and can have a full pressure turbo ECU plugged in. the 2.0 ECO has no intercooler and in the later models there was no 2.0 full pressure.

Is that the Low Pressure Turbo model? I think this one is just a boggo 2.0 NA job. I think I've decided against it - the Volvo only needs a few bits doing on it to get it MOT'd... I have to employ self-control! 3 cars and no storage isn't a place I wanna be right now ;D ...although the Mk1 Golf idea is still at the back of my mind...

Actually there are a whole abundance of unloved budget non german cruisers out there to choose from. We've never had it so good. Agreed, we need to be buying and using them NOW while they're still about, can't see many getting saved. Some people near us recently scrapped their 9000 because it needed the handbrake sorting. What about old Jag's? Never see much about them on here. Nice G-plate XJ40 near me was recently up for £495, and was visited by someone last week who'd just got himself a tidy N-plate 4.0 facelift for £600. Old tat like this might be priced/legislated off the roads in 10-20 years, we've got to seize the opportunity while we can.
