I picked up a can of alloy wheel paint the other day. It was 6 quid for a can. Which supposedly will do 5 wheels.
First off, is it going to look any good? I mean, 6 quid, its hardly expensive is it, anyone else do this before?
Now, i have sprayed from rattle cans before, but it was onto plastic skirts, I'm going to apply in a # pattern over the wheel, left to right and right to left, then up and down, down and up.
I have some wet and dry paper, so i presume the better i Key the original surface the better it will take, and the smoother the finish will be?
The bloke at the shop said not to bother with laquer? Is he talking from the lower end of his body, and if so, is there a special laquer to use?

Good question. I'm faced with this too. now wanting to spend a wad load i got in contact with a friend of a friend who is sand blasting them, plan is to spray em with the tin of £8 paint i bought but i'm pondering undercoating them to take the pitting out a bit or just laquer over the blasted naked surface. I nearly wish i'd bought one of those TSW yoko packages now, spending more than the car on these old 15's!

it doesn't matter if it's a Morris Marina or a Toyota Celica - it's what you do with it that counts

I painted a set recently... admittedly it was balck rather than silver finish, but I used the same technique as you described & it worked nicely. I did however put a couple of coats of laquer over the top at the end as some added protection

I painted mine with ordinary car paint - primer, then topcoat, then laquer. I used laquer mainly to protect the polished rim and stop it oxidising. They need doing again now though, but this was 2 years ago.

powder coating gets mentioned a lot but that sounds like more expense. my crusade for an inch bigger wheels seems nearly poinless now and i've messed up a few times, so having a sandblaster attack 'em gets my frustrations out and rid of some of the oxdised patches/craters!

I'm going to paint the wheels on my new Mk2 GTI black.... as I'm not a fan of Hockenheim's really, but can't be fished to get different rims, and reckon they'd look better in black on a silver car...

I painted a set of Mk1 Goof 9 spokes in spephel alloy wheel paint a couple of years back and they looked ace, just like when they were new. They were properly shagged before as well. Prep is the key I think

It took chuffin ages!! I may have got at least 3 Mk2 Goof 8 valve steelies spare soon as the Scirocco is shortly departing - you'd only need to bother the scrap man for one more...

I was once thinking about spraying my G40 alloys black. then i figured that on BBA RA's, you'll need to spend at least four years per rim prepping. to make matters worse they were 13"s, so smaller holes.
they stayed silver.

My Azev's are just painted in smoothrite I think!
That's all I was going to do to re-paint the huge scrape down one of the "arms" from where I whacked something I shouldn't have!

My brother has a set of lame assed TSW Blade imitations with a pair of 15" newish Avons on and a pair of non-descript legal tyres that'd suit a set of G60 wheels - could save a few bob, do you want me to ask if he wants to sell them? Or are you thinking of going for new ones?
