What's the going rate to transport a car? Basically I need to shift my Benz over to my (borrowed) workshop 12 miles away, so I can finally recommence the modding (thank god!). If getting it trailered is cheap enough I'd rather do that than limp it around some pretty severe Cornish "roads"

Going rate is roughly a pound a mile, but given that you only want to move it twelve miles bargain on some minimum charge action, I'd say at least £50 given it'll take somebody a couple of hours even if they're local to you. Just limp it, hell you could push it in a couple of hours, probably...

Trailer Hire is about £35 a day if you wanted to do it that way.
I'd be inclined just to stick it on a bar to shift it 12 miles, & plead ignorance if Cornish plod can be arsed to investigate it...

I'd be inclined just to stick it on a bar to shift it 12 miles, & plead ignorance if Cornish plod can be arsed to investigate it... Why ignorance if towing on a bar? - I was under the impression that this is still legal (unlike towing on a rope) mind you car has to be legal for road use (tax MOT ins etc) and maybe you know more about the individual circumstances than I do so are better qualified to comment on the legality situation. Hmm if that came out wrong - sorry but it was meant to be just a question/comment - I've read it back several times and I can't think how to phrase it better..... Slightly OT and a question for anyone along the same lines Towing Dollys - The ones that lift the front of the car onto a platform with wheels Anyone know if a car can be towed with one of these without MOT Tax or Ins? My gut feel was that it could be as it no longer becomes a car on the road but a trailer (of sorts!!!) I'm actually thinking of making one.....

I think that Benzboy's BENZ is Mot-free at the mo, that's why I made that suggestion...
I'm also thinking that if it isn't taxed / MoT'd you need all four wheels off the ground if you're doing it 'properly'. But I might be 100% wrong...

I think that Benzboy's BENZ is Mot-free at the mo, that's why I made that suggestion... Ahhh OK - then I'd agree with you might be taking a chance with a bar tow - you certainly did have better knowledge of the individual circumstances I'm also thinking that if it isn't taxed / MoT'd you need all four wheels off the ground if you're doing it 'properly'. But I might be 100% wrong... I thought that too but didn't want the hassle of storing a large car trailer for most of the year for small amounts of occasional usage - a towing dolly could be tucked away behind the shed and stood on end so seemed a much better idea I asked a local TO and he couldn't confirm either way from his memory/knowledge - he did say he'd try and find out but I don't see him very often to see how he got on and it's likely he will have forgotten anyway

Thanks for the responses! Sorry I should have made myself a bit clearer. Yes, the Benz has Mot and tax, but it has a leak from the carb and the throttle's sticking on (it's been stood a couple of months) - I may be inclined to chance it if the costs of transporting it are too high. I just didn't want to get it stranded on a blind bend in the middle of nowhere! I reckon it may be OK though. I don't have much of a clue about the legalities of towing - I thought that the banned towing dollies not long back, but I think a rigid bar is OK if the car is road legal. As I understand it, a rope is also banned but I'm probably wrong

If it is MoT'd & Taxed deffo go the bar route. I'm not sure whether ropes are yay or nay... I think they have to be a certain length and have a flag thingy in the middle. I have one for 'crusty truck' action but wouldn't fancy using one on the road. In fact having used the bar with good success (apart from when it fell off & we blocked a bus inot the bus stop) I wouldn't bother with a rope ever again

As I understand it ropes aren't ilegal yet, I've not found anything in the highway code about it.
Bars are very good but be cautious if the cars have the towing eyes on opposite sides as this will push the cars left and right as you accelerate and brake.
You can also use a bar to push a car around (not on the road though) if need be.

Does the towed vehicle definetely have to be road legal. I have heard it mentioned a few times but never seen it stated anywhere. Main reasons I ask are I know a lot of people who use A-frames for towing competion vehicles around that are neither taxed nor mot`ed. Admittedly the use of an A-frame is safer than a rope/pole but the principles the same. Other technical problem with an A-frame is that they are often used without a driver in the following car so for most cars the unbraked limit of 750kg is exceeded.

Does the towed vehicle definetely have to be road legal. As far as I know yes. You can't even park a car on the queens highway unless it's taxed, MOT'd and insured unless you are on the way to an MOT station. Infact if someone wants to get really pedantic I believe the cars tyres have to be a certain number of inches off the road before you don't need tax, insurance etc...

I'm sure the car has to be completly out of contact from the road if its being towed without any tti
