Who would have thought finding Cars would be so hard. Due to unforseen circumstances I missed out on Racer's Skud so all you Retro people I need ideas. So heres whats needed, cost of car around £600-£700 at the most for a decent T&T'd example, insurance no more that £200 a month after first payment. Retro obviously, rear-wheel drive would be good but not essential and quick enough to keep up with modern traffic. So gimmie ideas people because its stressing me out. Any good insurance companies would be good too.

£200 a month for insurance? christ that would get you pretty much anything. both my cars together don't come to that and I'm not exactly old.

Lol I'm only 18 so things are much more expensive for me, £200 is my absolute limit, I don't really want to spend that much, around £150 would be more resonable but for the right car...
Which insurance companies allow mods? I'm struggling to find any that'll even allow minor things such as wheels and lowering.

I used to use CIS, I'd insure a standard car then call them to ammend for the mods. Usually they didn't care , but a weber on a VW I had made it go up an extra £35 Drew used to use Liverpool Victoria, they had pretty much the same view I think

Ever considered a Vauxhall Viva HB/HC? They came in variety of engine sizes so you could start out with a 1.3 and as insurance allowed you could drop in anything up to a 2.3 using a donor and, i would suspect, no fabrication. They had various body styles 2 or 4 door etc, etc. Adrian Flux of Kings Lynn are well known for insuring anything with wheels, give them a try? PS: I did own a HC with the 1.3 lump. I found it very spacious for carrying loads of people, it was quite quick with a lovely short throw gear change, its handling wasnt the worst and the engine was as basic and as easy to work on as any car there is out there. Recommended.

My Rapid would cost you about £40 a month with Endsleigh, RWD, frequently overtakes modern traffic, is tested but could be taxed. Needs a few bits but would still have you with cash left over

What about a Toledo or Dolomite 1300/1500. My Toledo costs me £290 a year insured with Endsleigh (20 1 year no claims)

I like the Viva idea I reckon one of those can be made to look w00t pretty easy... just chop a couple of springs out and bosh on some modern-ish alloys for a cool-as-refrigerated-cucumber-sarnies retro cruising. Along similar lines, have you thought about the following: - chevette - avenger - Mk2 Escort 4 door All oozing the 'retro' vibe, can be snaffled easily within your budget, plus easy to mod, cheap to insure and with sub-1300cc cheap to tax & fuel. All are 'correct' wheel drive too Don't discount the 'J' options too... a datsun cherry / sunny from the late 70's / early 80's will priovide similar slimes per miles. Personally, I think you should stay away from anything that will require major bodywork surgery (Mini's / Beetles etc.) or anything that is too 'leftfield' and will require serious engineering to make it munch the tarmac satsifactorily. What you need is something you can pretty much hop straight into and enjoy.... save the daft / long term-projects till later

Norwich union would be good with you on a Toledo/Dolomite (I would know!) and they allow mods for a small cost (for example, twin webers were 30 quid, alloys 30 quid and so on, although it does change with resepct to your policy Adrian Flux could never match Norwich union on any of my Dollies, strangly enough.....with Footman James on the new one mind, they're the only ones intelligent to realise it's a Sprint and classify it as such (hence it only costs 450 quid ) ....AF want almost 1000!

Spending other people's money? Great! What about the Carina down in Cornwall? Plenty of random tidy-but-not-mint J-stuff around for that money, most of which will be rare enough that you won't have to spend lots of time and money on mod's to make stand out.
