No! the live to the plugs should be controled by a timer relay, on with the ign then staying on for mayby 15 to 20 seconds, the relay will turn the GP light on the dash off before the they turn the plugs off usually but never a perm live of they GP would burn out in a few mins ?

as above for power supply. test the old glow plugs using jump leads to see if they work, they will glow red if good and do nothing if dud. cud also be a slight air leak in the fuel system, i had a diesel that did this when left over night would be a to start and then run rough for a while, and be perfect the rest of the day.

thanks,double checked and the power does go off after the light about ten to 15 secs! hopefully it will be ok now. how do you do the check with jumpleads?

Connect one lead to the threaded part of the 'plug (which goes into the thread in the head), and the other to the terminal on top. Connect the other end of each lead to each battery terminal. Observe whether the plug glows or not.
Caution - if your engine has series connected glow plugs, with two terminals (and two wires) on each 'plug, don't test using this method - you'd probably break them, since they would be seeing 4x the voltage that they are supposed to.
