hi some of you will know I have just replaced the engine in my mk2 1.9d caddy pickup. well all is good apart from the mornings,it wont start first time and struggles on the second... when it does finally start it is lumpy/missfiring for about a mile down the road then absolutly fine, drives like a dream... would it be injector or glowplugs?or neither?
cheers for your help in advance

I'd try replacing the glowplug(s?) and run a load of fuel treatment through it. Definitely glowplugs first though, if it behaves once it's warm

I agree, unless you know its recently had glow plugs try them first, especially with winter coming, new ones save your battery a lot of effort.

You stop a diesel by stopping the fuel supply, and a mechanical pump can't pump with the engine stopped.... FWIW, sounds like dead glow plugs. Good luck getting to the one behind the pump

once it starts you can hear alot of knocking which sounds like the injectors to me,then when it clears a mile down the road its quiet as a mouse.. if it was glow plugs, surley that wouldnt make it run lumpy, just hard to start?

The advice given for poor diesel starting is nearly always defective glow plugs (or no supply to the glowplugs - an entirely different issue).
So I'm with everyone else!

Glow plugs, diesel knock is also a symptom of glow plugs, my P100 would knock even in the summer for a few seconds till i changed the GPs, poor running till warmed could be a seized or disconected cold start device (not all pumps have this), my Mk4 escort diesel doesn't and even with new GPs misses for the first 20 seconds in the cold as does my P100 on cold mornings cos i haven't wierd in the cold start yet. remember the glow plugs not only work after the light goes out but the residual heat carrys on working for 30 seconds or so after they switch off

yup, my LT35 does exactly that when the glow plugs have had it. Fires up lumpy on one or two, then chugs away making epic amounts of smoke until it warms enough to get going properly (about 30 secs). Thats how I know it needs new glowplugs

I would say defo glow plugs, they often don't last long and if only one is down it makes a huge difference.

That'll work. My last 205 Diesel behaved exactly the same on cold mornings, £16-worth of glowplugs later, problem solved. Thankfully when I baled it I took 'em off as the Van Of Doom is in need of a new set. ;D

I'd agree with Glowplugs but go with a half decent set like Bosch or BERU glow plugs (for some reason, the Peugeot didn't work too great on NTKs (Aka NGK items).
Megzy may be on the right track (it may prime the injectors once the car has stopped for a while (I know they're strange mechanical systems on the Direct injection models (they need a program for resetting the injector timing when the cambelt is attended to.

glad someone asked this as the cavalier can be a right knocky missy smoke machine on a cold start and I was worried it was something serious

right these are the old plugs which i took out,the two on the left were black but i wiped the second one in,before i took the pic. the two on the right look like they are the duff ones? i have just fitted the new ones, when i tested the power to the glowplugs,it is a permanent live is that correct?
