Very difficult to pick one car, for starters my Mk1 Golf all restored and pristine, which it hopefully will be one day. Maybe with a subtle engine change, like a 2 litre 16v on carbs, probably just keep it looking stock though. I expect a manual gearbox would finish it off nicely rather than the old 3-speed auto. Aside from that, either an E30 M3 or a 2002 in period 70's racing style, low and wide. Hmmm.... Actually, now I've started a standard mint Integrale or UR quattro wouldn't go amiss either, and pretty much any 911 ;D

Newer retro.... BMW M5 or M3 Although my iS is getting pretty close to nirvana... just need more power now... Older retro.... Mk1 escort, avenger, Mk3 'tina make me dribble Slow, low & pimpin'.... gotta be the 6-4 impala (apologies for a slightly unimaginative selection...)

The common thread which seems to run through all your replies are, apart from the odd one or two, that your ideal rides are not unobtainable, far from it in fact. Some really good posts, thanks people!

I honestly could not name one ideal car. It would have to be several and those would be.
73` 911 RS 2.7 69` Mustang Mach 1 (I wont be greedy and ask for a boss 302 ;D ) 73` Escort MK1 (thats handy I have one of those outside) 85` Opel Monza GSE (again thats handy I have one of those outside) and finally a Corolla GT AE86.
I am sure there are loads of others but I tried to limit myself (if only I could show such restraint with my own cars)

I would hope we are all building them Seriously, I wanted a 70`s RWD driving feel with Modern running gear, power and reliability Basically the car I always wanted to build when I was 17-18 but never had the money or knowledge Now it doesnt seen so expensive to do and the engines have got better and there are lots of cheap superchargers etc around ;D ;D So now I am building a Tarmac spec Kadett with as much power as a Works HS Chevette, and better drivability and reliability for less money than a Recent fiesta ;D Result ;D other than that..... stacklight merc, AMG S/C V6 on bags and Modern merc 5 spokes Early skyline, in Gunmetal, Black arches, Dark grey Watanabe`s Fiat 131 Abarth, fully arched on Mag Campags Anything 70`s/early 80`s german in a Berg Cup stylee Group 5 Zackspeed /Shnitzer style 2002 or E21 on slide throttle and Management , with heowge BBS Mahle Splitties ;D Mk2 Tina, slammed over Dunlops or Ronals, S2000 engine and box ;D or a 100e/105e done the same way..... HB or HC Viva in a Euro style..... clean low and wide with modern 16v screamer motor Not that I think about these kind of things a lot or anything ;D

Mk1 golf gti either in mars red or alpine white
pug 205 gti in sorrento green
Posrche 911 carrera in white with the deep dishes and the whale tail.
I could go on forever but I won't for yours and my sake
