motors were 500 / tonne down here when I went there last, so keep all your wiper motors, window motors, (i wonder if they include ignition coils?) separate whole wiring harnesses out of cars depending on how much of a luxo barge it was, could be worth £20 - £30 to you at the scrappy. Usually they won't take things like LPG tanks unless you've already cut them open so they can see theres no chance of any gas inside. I also make sure cars etc don't ahve any oil in , but its so rare I would take a car in with its engine still in that its rarely an issue. RADIATORS, strip off all the steel brackets, cowlings etc, else they won't give you proper money for it. Heating the brackets with a blowtorch melts the solder and they drop off.

Shame, looks like cars will have to be broken down into bitesize chunks instead But then you need to keep the car SORNed - which means renewing it, every year, for ever.

and loads of cars will end up registered to a "Mr Ben, 210 Fake street, Comedytown,"
If people can't send it off as scrapped, they will just register it to some random address and claim it's been sold.

Radiators are a new one on me. What are they classed as? And can you weigh in wiring looms with the plastic sheathing on? When I weigh cars in (quite often) they're usually near complete and have most of the drivetrain still attached, jsut not worth the hassle...or so I thought... BTW another DO is: Do cut the catalytic converter near the start and end of it so it doesn't have a long pipe part, they like to see the mesh. also DO separate them if you have two, as on twin-piped cars.

As long as you don't do dozens of cars or claim them on insurance it will be fine. Hey if they want to play by their rules... car theft numbers will rocket... The previous comment was an opinion, not a confession or endorsement. We weigh in a couple of 50Gallon barrel's worth every so often full of random curse word and get about 50 quid a go. travellers don't visit so it would just sit there, and money for rubbish is good.

Ive found with wirring, if you can chop off all bulkyplugs you can get 80p per k/g Raw copper was £2.40 per k/g.
So if you have the time strip it down, you can burn it off but thats not worth as much plus it's not a very green thing to be doing
We took some kettle leads in with the plugs chopped off and got £44 but that was about 52kgs worth.
Id rather take £2 worth of scrap to weigh in than let some thieving traveller have it. Utter scum bags.

never EVER burn plastic, rubber etc. Not only is it toxic and irresponsible but could get you in a LOT of trouble. Radiators are classed as 'braziery' I think (mix of brass, copper and solder) and good for £1200 - £1700 per tonne making a rad worth between £7 and say £20 for a landrover one. Yes DVLA seem to forever shoot themselves in the foot with their great new ideas. There should be a made up address we all agree on so that when DVLA realise there's 10,000 cars registered to it, they'll realise what an own goal they scored. What about making the address in Swansea SA99

A combination of the efficiency of the Royal Mail and effectiveness of the DVLA would see to that!

DO - Run the hose over the interior the night before you weigh the car in. ;D Joking aside that used to be a common trick with materials delivered to pottery industry. One of my jobs as a lab tech (before joing Civil Service ) was to meet lorrys and take a sample of their loads so I could then work out the moisture content and adjust the weight on which we were going to pay. Often several tons of water could be involved on expensive materials. Paul h

If they pick a car up at my local yard and more than a trickle of water comes out your liable to get a beating, they pick em up by the engine end and shake them, they also know how much they should weigh, its a bit dodgy our local yard and prices are always lower than anywhere else, its made up for by the fact its close enough to my house that you can sneak down there with a car on a rope instead of a trailer.

Volvo back as my main squeeze, more boost and some interior goodies on the way.
