OK, got a call today from a former work mate. Basicly, he's got a golf and wants some alloys (17's ) He's seen an Oak Green 5 door with a "flowed + match ported head" on 17's, one of the quarter windows is clear the rest of the glass green. Needs an MOT, as the previous owner hasn't MOT'd it due to a driving ban (I know the car will pass an MOT, as my neighbour, the local MOT inspector; MOT'd it 0 miles ago ) Paint has seen better days, body is straight though, looks like it's had a wing and bonnet at some point..... could use some re-painting really. Rainbow interior, the heater matrix has split (bypassed, so needs replacing!) head gasket and waterpump recently done... 115k, it's a late 1990 car with PAS and factory big bumpers. So what is it worth? Oh it's a 16v

It's all about condition really. Oak Green 16v Mk2's tend to fetch a premium but if the paint is a bit shoddy, it's had a window smashed and replaced with clear glass and needs a heater matrix then the value will be well down. It smacks of a careless owner really (also fitting 17's is just wrong!) so I'd be wary of what else might be wrong with the car and go for a low offer if you want it - £500?

without pics its hard to say, but realistically it could go for as low as 6-600.......but more likely in the 750-1000 range depending on how bad the body is...

We are all going to come round to your house and beat you to death with tiny, tiny sticks so it takes ages ;D Tell him if he's putting 17s on a Mk2 he should be shot for crimes against humanity. Still, it is his car so he can do what he wants

LOL, pics will follow, don't worry. 15" wheels are the future on MKII's. Guess what sold the alloys to my mate Carlos , and I got £200 for them Sooo... Now i just need some 15" rubber to go on those Work RSB (some made light J wheel) alloys I've had in my mates garage for the last 3 months.... Where did I put those smart car rear tyres quick edit, the alloys look a lot like these, but red

Heater matrix is a nasty job but there is a good guide somewhere I found after I'd done one on my old Mk2 Ryder. It might be on the 'matey matey' site if you have a search for it. You don't need to take the dash out but remember that there are three bolts/studs inside the engine bay that hold the airbox (with matrix in) to the firewall, if you don't undo those you'll never get it out as I found out after a few hours knuckle scraping and swearing! I believe if you fit a Mk3 matrix as a replacement you can do away with the pressure bypass valves that are fitted on some as a VW recall to do with matrixes bursting under pressure. Might be worth a search on the ClubGTI forum to check though.

Yep, fit a Mk3 Matrix and loose the bypass valves. Mk2 Golf matrixes are curse word The job is a bit of a pig but nothing compared to doing it on an Audi 90 Quattro, believe me ;D
