it depends on how good you are at twirling spanners? mind it will need a timing belt kit aswell.
oh and a blown hg can sometimes knock out the bottom end on the 16v engines.
is it deffo the hg?

maybe it was reassembled properly? its possible he's mad a mistake somewhere along the line, if its cheap enough though its doesn't matter.
the thing is though, why is he not fixing it and selling for more money if he's capable of changing the bottom end he should be able to sort a head gasket?

Volvo back as my main squeeze, more boost and some interior goodies on the way.

There are lots of cheap 16vts out there so unless its the bargain of a lifetime it might be best to walk away. I've got the 20vt so can't really guess as very different engine (think the 16vt was the lancia integrale model). Best place to ask is the fiat coupe forum (google it) as you'll get an answer straight away from lots of 16v owners.

I've no experience of them whatsoever, other than knowing the reputation (fairly fragile & tricky). But... they're absolutely great looking cars: Well done Fiat for some real bravado in giving us this shape. Just needs bigger wheels then it's sorted. Good luck if you go for it!

Ive 2- bothnowhighmileage. A (5cyl )20valve turbo & a 4 cly 16valve n/a. Our 4cyl has covered nearly200k, but can be a right pain in the****, ( my Mrs loves them)
Our 4cyl is now on its 3rd engine-having grenaded 2, and top ended one -experience now telling me repairing usually isnt economically feasible -better to replace with known good.
However,if you're in the south I can point you at a good Fiat mechanic, or there's always Solo Italia.......
It'llbe more complicated/expensive than you expect -whatever'' the problem''.

Well, I don't know much about the 16v Fiat Turbo, but I've helped with a top-end rebuild on an Alfa GTV 2.0 Twin-spark after the cambelt had snapped at speed, including 16 new valves, guides, belts and head gasket. That was quite a pain and took a very long time, with me assisting a qualified mechanic to do it. We had to buy special tools for the head bolts, new head bolts because they're torqued into yield and hence single-use only, plus the gasket and belts, all up it was a very expensive job, several hundred dollars even before the head was sent out for reconditioning.
It took basically a weekend to take the head off and another weekend to put it back on. As we were re-assembling it several of the cam bearing retainer bolts stripped their threads out of the head for no reason whatsoever and had to be helicoiled in-situ with a rare M7x1.0mm helicoil kit which no shop within a 10km radius had in stock and had to be fetched from the other side of the city.
All in all though, it went back together eventually and ran fine afterwards, apart from some assorted vacuum lines falling off in the first drive. We did the whole swap on uneven ground in a driveway with only a small jack which didn't help, as you have to go in from the RHS front wheel-well for some of the tensioners and such. On a hoist or in a decent shed it would have been easier, but it is still doable by a backyard mechanic, as long as you take your time and think about what you're doing. I hope that the two engines are somewhat related, if they're not then you can probably disregard my comments!
