I think it depends entirely on the car, the important thing to me is that mods are done well with forethought and skill, nothing pains me more than a hacked about rarity because someone thinks ownership of a grinder and a welder makes them a modifying guru..
On the flip side very few thing make me admire a car (and owner) more than well though out effective (and above all well engineered) modifications, good examples would be 'Sowens' P6, 'V8 celicas' celica and Nightmares Van ect ect
Any easily reversible mods are fine with me, if it can be undone easily what's the problem, big mods have to adhere to the above rules...
What I actually don't understand are cosmetic mods that don't improve the driving experience, for instance, I understand a lower tighter chassis with polybushes and well matched shocks and springs for better handling and aggressive looks, but bouncing down the road on chopped springs and stock dampers (or cheap ebay coilovers wound right down) grounding out over every bump just baffles me, but that's probably because I like to drive my cars hard everywhere possible and with a car like that you have to compromise, which to me is no fun cars in my world stock or modded are for driving even if they only get taken out once a year and tickled along at 50 mph..
The thing is I actually like standard cars and providing you buy a car suitable for the job in hand you actually have to compromise less, though personally I don't count more effective brakes better headlamps braided brake hoses ect as 'mods' in the truest sense ...
For instance I have a Camaro for razzing a Transit for hauling curse word, and a P38 Rangie for daily duties and towing, no need to mod them as they all do the job that I require of them perfectly well just as they came out of the factory..

IMO There is not a single (standard) car i could look at and think 'wow, thats perfect'.
Even if it's just they shape of a door handle or something like that, for me theres always somthing that could be tweaked and adjusted to make it 'perfect'.

I like modified cars and standard ones. And some old ones and some new ones. I think some should be modified and some should be left standard. Mostly I think cool cars are cool, and rubbish ones are rubbish.

1989 Peugeot 205. You know, the one that was parked in a ditch on the campsite at RRG'17... the glass is always full. but the ratio of air to water may vary.

I think when this was last discussed someone mentioned the AC428 as being unimprovable (and I agreed with that) but then a picture surfaced of a very cool race spec one... I don't think I could do a thing to this Maserati A6GCS though. RR is a broad church which is why there is no need for a FIGHT! ;D

Ive allways said that if i win the lottery... I'm gonna buy a big old 70's roller and slam it over some ats cups just to put an end to them wheels and vw's... Once you've done it to a rolls royce they just wont look good on anything haha... (but the roller of course lol)
I think the only car i wouldnt (outwardly) modify would be a supercar, But then I'm a bit picky about those so most of em can sod off (pretty much every ferrari). I'm a lover of early lambos. And would absolutely love a miura or espada , But to use it every day you'd have to fit a decent stereo and decent seatbelts... Otherwise whats the point, You'd just be Making do...
It all depends on how you view a car and the cars past.
I like to see outlaw 356's, But seeing one on standard rims and crossplys with chrome trimrings and a lovely story about how it was driven by a woman from new, and lovingly cared for then its nice to see it stay that way... It has its own history..

Some of the rarest and most collectable cars are one offs, coachbuilts, cars modified into race cars and the likes.
If you had the worlds last 1.6 pinto, I think it would be a shame to modify it . If you have one of the last 100 then I don't think it matters so much if you modify it properly, nice exhaust, better springs and brakes, electronic ignition etc . If it was one of a few hundred left then work away, get a cossie YB in it and have fun.
I really don't like this attitude of modifying it for the sake of annoying people who would seek to preserve a rare car.
Things should be modified to make it better , being a "modder" and modifying everything for the sake of it doesnt make you cool, just makes you a barryboy.

I've never owned a standard car and no matter how much money I have in the future I never will. Still never seen a standard car that I wouldn't change no matter how rare. Matt Couldn't have said it better myself! But I can appreciate an interesting or old car that has been restores to complete OE spec. I just won do it that way my self. OE spec still needs rims and a drop - in my opinion - then if its rare and a purists delight it could easily be put back I cant think of any standard car that wont benefit from a pair of rims and subtle drop, it may only be 15mm, but still a drop I think the main thing is how peopel react, roll up in a rare car fully modded to a purists meet and expect hatred, but roll up in same car to a car club/general meet and find both i think its more about peopel reactions in general, for me I'd rather see a modded classic on the road being driven and used than a fully original one parked up never being driven

I don't think I could do a thing to this Maserati A6GCS though. the front looks liek a 10mm drop would balance it out, rear wheels are a little tucked in the arches and the fronts arent Sorry couldnt resist ;D ;D ;D ;D ;D one thing for me tho, I know I coudl never get my buly frame through the door to drive it...
