Sometimes the best shows are the ones for which you have the least expectations. The “End of season display” at Nottingham Transport Heritage Centre was billed as “some of our collection of road vehicles on display” on their website which didn’t sound like all that much. My mate Phill with the 2 Deloreans was convinced there was a car show as well but I wasn’t so sure, ended up rolling the family round there in the Omega.
We arrived early and there was a few vintage and “cloth cap” type cars parked up so we had a go on the kiddies adventure playground thing and looked around a vintage bus which was parked up. Wandering further into the place I found a workshop where steam engines and such were being restored (I just know that when I retire I’m going to end up joining one of these steam preservation groups) and a fair amount of general tat. Moving further on was a cafe in the proper old school style and a workshop where some cars were on display and some busses were under restoration. Outside were a large collection of Morris Minors from the Lincolnshire Minor OC and a number of vintage Austins from the Austin 7 OC.
More busses were on display round the side and at the back there was more dereclict busses awaiting restoration. Sad to say that about a year ago the place was attacked by arsonists and several historic busses were destroyed. Looking at the ones under restoration, seeing the amount of work involved, it must be massively heart breaking to have all that work wiped out.
Around from the derelict busses was a model railway display, more tat, more industrial dereliction and loads of abandoned railway stuff, rolling stock whatever. Back towards the front from here was two miniature railways which were 50p a go for adults and they let my lass ride free even though she is a half fare child... Nice one. There is a preserved steam railway and you can ride a steam train all the way to Loughborough from here which is about £7 or £8 per adult if you want to do that. We didn’t.
There was also some vintage style merry-go-round and hook-a-duck action, a display of parrots and some other toot going on. By the time we got back to the display area it was pretty full of a wide range of classic cars including a couple of kit cars and one hot rod.
We departed after having a natter with Phill & his family and thinking it wasn’t a bad family-friendly car related activity to do on a Sunday morning for the princely sum of £1.50 per adult admission. It’s not exactly rock & roll, but if you like the general mechanical stuff as well it’s well worth it.
I never knew half that stuff was there, and have never been in the place before which is an omission on my part as its fairly local for me.
