www.japcarclub.com/jae/If you're into anything Japanese, retro and modern, it might be worth popping up to Billing in Northampton over the weekend. Unfortunately the bulk of Japanese cars are far too modern to be displayed. Personally if I wanted to see new Micra's and Evo's I would go to my local car park, but there should be around 30 Datsuns there, as well as SC100 Suzukis, S800 honda's, a few RX3/4 and early CROWN/celicas too and hopefully a few other surprises. Last year we had an Isuzu 117 and this well known 280C There were a few nice big Toyota centurys, Nissan presidents and oddball Hondas too. Naturally I'll be down with my blue 100A estate! Rmad you have to bring your Cressida up!

Hotwire, if could post me some flyers before Saturday I'll do my bit for retro-rides.com. Don't worry I'll be selective!

Mmm I really like that Isuzu 117. Lovely lines, it looks a bit like a Lancia. Was it an Italian designer? Have a good time.

The japanese wanted to sell cars desperately to Europeans so they enlisted Euro-designers to get some of the cars noticed. Bertone have done the most functional and clean designs ever seen in car design - VW Golf/Passat/Scirocco, Esprit, Delta, Panda, uno...etc and they designed the Isuzu 117, which makes it even more tragic that they never made it to the UK. The first imported Isuzu - the Piazza was also done by them in 1981. As well as the early sixties mazda 1500/1800 which we did get.....

doh. Giugiaro designed the mazda while at Bertone, while the rest I wrote is balderdash. I guess I forgot to state the obvious...... Italdesign also did a curious people carrier in 1977 called the MegaGamma. Lancia binned the idea, and Nissan used a reworked version for their Prairie in '82.

It was also recycled into the Uno - all the magazines at the time commented so! Quite significant, predating all the current hatchbacks with their high rooflines.

Italdesign also did the re-style of the Morris Marina, funny how you never see it mentioned as something they are proud of, in fact you don't see it mentioned at all ;D

Anyone ever see a Zagato body design? Those are nice too. My favourite has to be the Zimp prototype, it was originally to be made as an upmarket Imp, but Chrysler canned it after only three prototypes had been made. Apparently only two are left.
