My dad is changing his Subaru Impreza WRX and Volvo V70 D5 for a new Saab 9-3 TiD 150 (company car) and a new Land Rover Discovery TD6 (due to having a tall family). Neither of these are particularly 'Ring friendly, so I'm trying to persuade him that we should get a car for going to the 'Ring / a few trackdays / hillclimbs. So, the criteria. Pretty quick Relatively cheap to insure Comfortable on long trips (dad has a back problem) Cheaply repaired if things go wrong Easy to tune/upgrade Not to large Preferably manual Golfs etc will probably be too uncomfortable on long trips. I'm 6ft2 and 15 (still growing ) so nothing to small as I said. Adam

BMW 325i
Although if you're planning on sitting in the back, forget it.

I'm not planning on sitting in the back! I've been round the 'ring in the back of a 400bhp Impreza STi and it was the scariest experience I've ever had . Never again. A 3-series had crossed my mind and seems like a good idea. Any other suggestions? Adam

ditto on 325i and alfa 75. a 325 with uprated suspension, and in healthy condition is a proper weapon.

it doesn't matter if it's a Morris Marina or a Toyota Celica - it's what you do with it that counts

E30 would get my vote (if you don't want a Golf!), preferably a 325i sport with factory LSD

Depends how much you want to spend but I would look at something like a nissan silvia S12-S15. S12 and S13 less than a grand. S14 1500-4500. S15 4500 up overs. Many parts can be used from the later models to upgrade the earlier models. And not being the smallest bloke in the world I have always found Japanese coupes have loads of room compared with european coupes. My S12 is one of the few cars I have ever driven that I don't have to have the seat right back compared with my Monza where I have the seat right back and also reclined a long way and still have my head on the roof and my knees wedged under the steering wheel

I had to remove the cartridge sunroof

Is it much more than a tonne with the rear seats removed etc? Adam
