On the basis that a some retro cars later become classics on the basis of the following check list; 1) Initially was a desirable or interesting car 2) Was a powerfull version of a standard range. 3) Limited production number 4) Low/high VIN/serial number (first or last produced) 5) Rare combination of factory options 6) Owned by a celebrity 7) Version of a car that appeared in a movie or on TV 8) Was in the news somehow, e.g. used in a crime 9) Was well known as a very bad car - Therefore very few left 10) ? I have come up with my own list of future classic cars that will increase in value over time................& maybe even provide a potential retirement fund for my later years. Saab 900 Carlsson Alfa 155 Silverstone Alfa 155 Q4 Volvo 850 T5R Lancia Delta Evo (have always kept their value anyway) Ford Sierra Cosworth RS500 MX5 MG RV8 FIAT Barchetta TVR Chimaera, Griffith, Tuscan, Cerbera Jag XJRS Fiat Strada 130TC Abarth Ford Escort RS1600i Ford Fiesta XR2 Mk1 Ford Orion 1600E Ford XR4i Citroen CX Turbo 2 Bently Mulsanne Turbo R Opel Monza AMC Pacer Renault 5 Turbo 2 Peugeot 309 Goodwood Ford Capri 280 Brooklands Audi 80 Sport Golf Gti 1800 Campaign Lotus Carlton BMW Alpina B10 BMW M6 and finally just for the hell of it............................The Lancia Thema 8.32 V6

A good proportion of those cars are already classics I read a great ebay advert today that descibed a MK1 Golf GTi as a "possible future classic." Possible? Future?

A good proportion of those cars are already classics they are, i think the point is that the list focuses on classics that will increase in value, not cars that will become classic

Ford Escort RS Cosworth - once it's shaken off the last of its "chavtastic" image, I reckon it'll settle down into a nice performance classic. Standard ones will be worth even more due to the high proportion that got "pimped".

I'm still a fan of Big Bumpers... but ONLY on >90 spec GTI's... Good call - I wouldn't change what the car originally came with (unless it looked seriously pony ;D )

About value and rareness, lets not forget all the commercial vehicles, because they will, as happened with for example the split window vw busses, be used up, and then tossed away.

Standard ones will be worth even more due to the high proportion that got "pimped". Totally agree, and whether you like 'em or not, they're a great tool! Pick of the bunch for me would be the road going "Motorsport" version - no sunroof, very few toys, cloth interior with odd geometric pattern on....but all the bits that really count. The ideal formula to make sure YOUR car becomes valuable would be to wait until it's in the "cheap classic" category then create a hit TV show where, say, someone goes back in time or something equally daft, and have your car as the main star of the show. Value is guaranteed to double....

Mainly because since the 80's cars have been treated as disposable items whereas before then cars were far more long term posessions. Clean examples are very rare. They just have to get past the 25 year rule.
