i have been offered a 1986, 309, 1.6, for very little money. do they have any potential for tweaking? has anyone on here ever had one? i was thinking daily driver, but with a little tweaking here and there. possibly lowering, bit more power, new wheels etc. is the 1.6 the same unit thats in the 205Gti Any pics to give me some ideas would be great Guy

Sounds great. Not sure about the engines though. Although..... 309's are seriously cheap, even in 1.9GTi form. I'd say plump for a GTi straight outta the box, unless insurance is a major issue. I will be alot cheaper & easier in the long run, and give you a bigger grin from day 1.

my 2nd car was a 309 SRi, basicly the GTi 1.6 in a 309 shell with 5 doors.
My god that car was fun.
Plump for basic mods to start, filter, mongoose exhausts work well with them, mild cam and head flow.
Very much more stable, than the 205 out of the bends, in my eyes a better car.

yeh, they have a slightly longer wheel base than a 205 so they're more stable. could always stick an Mi 16 in there

There is a nasty 1.6 as well, check which it is. There's the SRI, then there's a GL as well, about 80 bhp IIRC and the TCA suspension, not a proper wishbone with drop links to the ARB. If it an SRI it should be quite good.

I had this 1.6 5dr in 1990-91, GR-spec which was one up from GL, but still no PAS, EW, CL or anything, IIRC. Even though quite new it had a dodgy past, but there were no mechanical problems I remember. Carb-fed engine went pretty well. Big boot, but high sill. Got written-off rather dramatically, but driver error rather than any car problem.

309 also has a wider rear beam, which many people retrofit to 205 GTi's as an aid to handling. I'm with pog. 1.9 GTi is so cheap I'd go straight for that one rather than spend money up-speccing a lesser car. Plus insurance for a standard GTi will probably be less than that for a tuned 1.6. Plus you get more toys inside, better seats, bigger brakes etc. Not really worth spending money on a boggo 1.6. Alternativley if you arn't goiung to tune it then stick with teh 1.6 as standard.

I think they're a good looking car, and ive seen many that are absolutely on the deck aswell, especially at the back! So slamming must be fairly straightforward I guess....

don't they have torsion springs in the back (like the vw bug and pug 205), so its just to drop it a few notches? And get some coils up front

The 309 GTi has a reputation as one of the best handling fwd cars ever built. so it's going to be a hard act to improve on!

thanks for all the info. i went to look at the car it all seems pretty good, the fuel pump is knackered i was standing there pouring fuel into the carb to try a get the fuel pump working, it did in the end, sweet engine only 54k on the clock.
it needs boot struts, little bit of paint here and there and a damn good clean out. the clutch also needs looking at??
Street Sleeper me thinks!!!!

carb?, not the GTi/SRi engine then
They are worth very little unless they are the faster ones to be honest, and as others have said, the GTi can be had for no money these days.
So did you buy the car?

boot struts is acommon prop on them and 205's. Struts probably cost more than the car is worth so best leave them. fuel pump and clutch eh! Again more than the cars's worth to fix. I'd offer to take it for free tbh as it will cost you to have the clutch done, which can be a pig on most Pugs. Other than that walk away, save up and buy a GTi

any one got a pic of the 309 that was in thundersaloons 2litre class (think thats where I saw it)? IIRC it used the engine as a stressed member that the suspension mounted to. from memory it looked farkin evil too. I'm possibly wrong, I'm not much good at finding pics on the net
