...Beetles were cool back when they were unappreciated and seeing a modded one was unusual, but to be honest I can't remember the last time I saw an unmodified one. I can! This one lives very close to me: although I've never actually managed to track it down, I see it out on the road regularly with a 'mature' gentleman at the wheel. Apologies for the shonky phone picture - one day I'll capture it properly. ![](http://imgur.com/XYAjml.jpg) I totally fell in love with it at first sight, and it still makes my heart beat faster when ever I see it. It's got just the right amount of genuine patina on it, and in the wholly unlikely event that I one day get a chance to own it, I think I'd just coat everything in lacquer and not touch a single detail. Utter Perfection. Or just a blank canvas? Discuss.

Mmmm 1959 - a very good year! If I had a Beetle I'd like it to be a 58/59 - loads of cool old bits, including that low roof line - but without the obvious difference of the earlier oval window. I hate to say it but I'd slam that one! ;D

Is that Mint Humbug? That's one of my favourite Bugs ever. Wow! Yes it is! Cant believe you remember it! I built it in '87, did Street Machines Cruise for Charity in it, got into the top 10 at the first Bug Jam and a feature in an early Volksworld. Had it 7 years. I loved that car! ![:)](//storage.proboards.com/forum/images/smiley/smiley.png) I was speaking to Stu ( I think) from B289 and he was saying its been found and is being rebuilt.

Unmodded for me, I've had both modded & unmodded Bugs & the unmodded one's always seemed a better drive. That's a lovely old beast, nice to see it being used daily as well instead of being tucked away.

kes, the next time you see that bug I demand that you simply sit in your car next to it until the owner returns - then you impress him with vw trivia, and MAKE IT YOURS!!

not in this lifetime: ruby, '29 hillman

I knew where it was about ten years ago...in the hands of Ian from Now Promotions (who ran Bug Jam at the time) but I'm not sure what happened to it after that. I think it was in a sorry state and Ian wasn't into Beetles as much as he was event organising so I'm pretty sure it wouldn't have come out of his garage restored. As an aside, with credentials like that, I'm not surprised your cars are so flippin' good. ;D

This and the air cooled thread have come at a bad time for me. Was at my parents checking on my hidden E30 when I spotted one if their neighbours had rolled this out his garden. ![](http://i728.photobucket.com/albums/ww283/bigalan/56e80f8b.jpg) Been off the road 15 years! My dad has arranged for me to pop in for a 'chat' with the owner next week, and has cleared enough hiding space for it to live at his house:-) I'm sooooo tempted, but know nothing about Beetles! Is it a lost cause?

If I do get the one above I won't be going crazy, but a few subtle mods may be a possibility! Early ones are amazingly easy. That one has none of the current ' hot tricks' to it like narrowed front beam . Later , as above, are a bit more work as they are either balljoint front end ( needs lowered spindles possibly plus swayaways) or Mac struts on the 130 * range Basic spec was swayaways fitted to front to allow lowering, Opel Kadette Spax adjustable shockers and uprated anti roll bar , rear was lowered by turning on the splines 2 one way and 1 the other ( can never remember which way or inner or outer ) . Rear was fitted with antiroll bar and Mini Spax adjustabel shocks. 5.5J Empi 5 spokes with 135 and 165 Michelin ZX and a 1776 mild engine ,just on 110bhp , ran 16 seconds 1/4s consistently, single twinchoke and 35mpg on a run. I can honestly say it was the best handling car I have ever owned . My mate nearly put his 2 yera old XR31 in a ditch trying to keep up through the bends ![:)](//storage.proboards.com/forum/images/smiley/smiley.png)

![](http://img836.imageshack.us/img836/1061/localbeetle.jpg) Lives just down the road from me. Beetles are pretty easy to mod. A wealth of parts and upgrades, pretty simple mechanically, good starter car imo. earlyer ones are easyer to play about with. bigalan I'd say just have a good look at it. if it's been of the road for 15 years it'll obv need work, sounds like there's allready a deal going on with your dad lol.
