Have experience of two and found Halfords matt black is expensive, poor coverage. Took two tins to get an average coverage on a single door on the Dolly. I used Hycote on the old Golf was £1 a tin from a local cheapie store at time and coverage was excellent, virtually had to try and be stupid to get any runs etc and was all done on the street. Roof was tricky as flat but same issue with all paint tins. Think 10 tins in total? This is it:

so how many coats was that? The Laurel is a bit bigger with the boot etc so maybe 14 cans? Still looking for a place to do it as I'm not doing it on the drive next to a white impreza....ermmmm no!

certainly don't waste money on halfords stuff. i matt blacked my polo for a tenner from wilkos. wrought iron paint, a 4 inch roller and a tray. there was more than enough to spare to cover up the scratches she picked up in the car park. plus you get more coverage for your money unless your lucky enough to spray your motor in a garage.

The best spray cans i've ever seen are called cromadex, they spray the paint like a spray gun, not it a circle patch like most cans if that makes sense With those cans youd pretty much get the same finish of a spray gun anyway, I'm not sure how easy to get hold of they are as i get them through a local metalworking buisness :/

^ cans made up by a paint shop, may get flat fan nozzles rather than dot pattern, may have to ask but a place I used to use offered flat or dot. Far better for coverage and less likely to be streaky. Cost more than off the shelf happy shopper stuff though.

For me the point of matt black is a cheapie way to improve the mismatched look of the car. Spending a fortune on decent cans to be 20% better than you would have got with cheapie cans makes little point.
Doing a good job in the prep and masking will make more difference. As will spraying somewhere sheltered and dust free.

I would say rolling a car is a shed load easier than spraying with cans and probably cheaper ...plus you have less masking off to do. as has been said though good prep is the important part. I have rolled 1 .5 cars and really like the results.

I like it as it is - i'd leave it. some great ideas there! The car is a gloss blue but not metallic, I would have to rub the pinstripe down as it wont come of the car. Like I said the only downfall I have is it will have to be done outside as I don't know anyone with an indoor area. Satin black sounds good and I love the military paint! what cool colours I'm thinking satin black all over the car offset by some chrome small graphics. First two pics are my laurel and the last one is the inspiration. look any good?: build thread for above car on NZ website www.oldschool.co.nz/phpbb/viewtopic.php?f=17&t=4433&start=0&hilit=lofa

Flat fans cover better than dot, less chance of striping, better paint than the cheapo stuff. Won't need re-doing so quickly, etc. You pays your money and takes your choice.

Make sure the conditions are right, weatherwise. Moisture seems to have a horrible effect on matte paint (it'll come up white lookoing!)
