I'm considering doing the Laurel matt black until i can afford a proper respray. Only thing is i have to use rattle cans I'm afraid as i cant get use of a compressor. If i take my time and do it outdoors (when not wet or rainy) is it easy to get a uniform finish? ie no dark/light patches or 'wet' looking patches. How many rattle cans do you reckon it would take to do the car? They sell x12 cans of 500ml Simoniz matt black on ebay for £30 delivered which doesnt seem too bad. Anyone done this or have advice?

If you're going to do it use satin rather than matt as you get a slight shine to it rather than it looking like a black board. You'll need lots and lots of tins. I used 2 doing a bonnet and I didn't get great coverage. If you try to stretch the amount of paint you've got then it'll look patchy.
Alternatively you could get a cheap HVLP spray station for £40 and 5 litres of the military satin paint for £40 in nearly any colour you want. You'll probably get a much better result and it'll be in a more interesting colour.

Go to a paint shop and try and find Promatic rattle cans of matt/satin black. I used them to do my car and they're the best rattle cans i've ever used. Use some sort of HVLP system so you don't lose pressure as the can empties.

Personally I'd spend a little more and buy a cheap compressor with a spray gun, paid 60quid for mine, 40 quid for paint and thinners and off u go
In the very least you'll avoid agonising rattle can finger

Just do the normal stuff of making sure it's smooth, the paints keyed and it's clean. Have a look in the A52 thread as they painted a few cars with this in a day.

It's satin BS381 636, Pru blue from the BS381C colour chart. You can do as little or as much prep as you want, MV paint appears to stick to anything. We thinned with white spirit but it took an age to dry. Standard thinners flash off quicker. It was sprayed along with mine and Ryan's cars in a single day. We were pushing it though, and we had all done varying amounts of prep beforehand ;D

some great ideas there! The car is a gloss blue but not metallic, i would have to rub the pinstripe down as it wont come of the car. Like i said the only downfall i have is it will have to be done outside as i don't know anyone with an indoor area. Satin black sounds good and i love the military paint! what cool colours I'm thinking satin black all over the car offset by some chrome small graphics. First two pics are my laurel and the last one is the inspiration. look any good?: build thread for above car on NZ website www.oldschool.co.nz/phpbb/viewtopic.php?f=17&t=4433&start=0&hilit=lofa

I was going to suggets using rollers as well, me & a mate 'rollered' his VW T25's in battleship grey. Good finish on it & can even be done if it's a bit breezy.

this is mine, satin black sprayed with compressor/gun with a grey primer base underneath. A fair bit of prep work and then about a day to spray panels whilst they were off. fin1 by taske, on Flickr
