I would have thought that the Standard (standard) axle should take the power of a stock Rover v8.
Its a pretty huge thing and its closely related to the axle used in the Triumph TR2, TR3 so there should be alternative gearsets if necessary... I'd research this a bit before starting swapping axles out.
Sherpas all have 5x5" PCD AFAIK.

akku : I was wondering if I could keep the axle that is there for 'phase1' of the modifications and then look to upgrade for 'phase2', so your post is most valuable. I prefer to do things incrementally rather than a big bang approach (helps with budgeting the finances too!) saying that, I was wondering if a big-bang would occur from the back-end if I left it "standard" and bolted a V8 onto the front ;D
