Good question. The reason it's called a Registration Document is because it just shows who the car is registered to.
If two parties are in court claiming ownership of a car the judge would expect you to be able to prove that you paid for it, that you have a receipt for it, that you have been using it, etc. The obvious stuff really. I would expect to see a bank statement showing the transfer of the money that paid for the car, a receipt from the seller for the same amount, a statement from your wife saying that she was with you when you bought it and collected it from the seller and that you have been driving it to work every day since then.
You know, PROOF. Proof that you own the car.

I'd be interested to know how other countries get on with this scenario of ownership proof. With the still ever increasing number of stolen cars on false identities plus the still increasing "cloning" of plates problem, we really need a far better system than we have at the moment. I cant help but think the reason for lack of action so far, is that we are only a few years away from everyone having to fit the little black box that monitors where the car is what it is doing etc etc or should that read where we are or what we're doing.

In Australia it's the same arrangement, registration papers don't prove ownership. All of the cars which I've bought I paid cash, and I get the previous owner to write in their own hand and sign a statement saying that they have sold me the car and received the payment in full. Not on any official form or anything, just a piece of paper, but it is in writing and I keep them filed away just in case. Because none of my cars are ever running when I buy them I also need to take someone to help get it running or load it onto a trailer, so they can act as a witness if needed! ;D

doesn't the fact the last owner has to sign the v5 prove they have sold the car to you, with or without a receipt?
i have a capri, but don't have a receipt off the last owner, my bank statement will show me withdrawing money on the days leading up to the purchase.

therefore you can register any car in any name of your chosing, and yet it stiill be perfectly legal to sell the car on, providing you can prove ownership!
the dlva is absolving itsel of any responsibility of a that the name on the v5 is the person who owns the car, or of any errors made when document issued.
Brilliant! I am purchasing all my cars in name of Someone else from now on. I feel sorry for you mr Joe Bloggs!!
