Had the afternoon off today so got back into the Ventora. Needed to tidy the garage a bit before I could get started but got some done none the less. First job was to finally fit the fith size fuel hose I tried to the Plymouth so I could move it so I could get the garage doors open in front of the Vx. That was easy enough and the old brute fired right up and backed up, OKish. That brake dragging hasn't fixed itself with a few months standing over winter! So I can see the front of the Plymouth for the first time in 6 or 7 months! So I can now see the front of the Ventora for the first time in ages. Still a bit of work to do. Today I have been mostly degreasing and degunking. The engine bay and front valance was full of crud so I had to get all that out. I've been trying Cilit Bang 'cos I'd got some in the kitchen but that was no good. So I bought a special "grease eating enzyme" cleaner from Halfords. Non-Toxic, non-irritant, environmentally friendly.... yeah, you guessed it - it doesn't work! So I put a load of celly thinner in a squirty bottle and used that. Luvly jubbly. After that, realise I can't push the Vauxhall back in the garage with slippery floor, sticky calliper and slightly up hill. So charged up a abttery and backed it back in on the starter. Great fun "no brakes" moment... But safe and sound. So I filled up some low spots and puttyed some pits in the filler a while ago so I finished sanding them and tried some primer over them to see how flush I'd got it all. Looks OK. This is what keeps me going if you were wondering... Oh, and the narsty surprise? Well, lets just put it this way, if you're thinking of buying a car from California because it will be "rust free" consider this... I just about put myy foot through the floor in the Plymouth. This is just some of what I found when I lifted the carpet to see what crunched... Bvgger. Theres plenty more where that came from... Oh well, theres always tomorrow...

when they rot, they really can rot. I guess its just a bigger car has more space for more rust!
Some of the 70s stuff is dreadful for it though. Sound familiar?
I've had plenty of rust-free yanks. Odd that this one was supposed to be so clean and virgin has turned out to be hiding some real interesting surprises.

Your ventora is going to be the nuts. Such a great shape. Are you going to keep the standard engine, or put a good one in?

Penski, I'm a mutha funkin' werewolf.
Mr_B, for now the stock high-mile motor will have to do or it will be another year in the shed and the Plymouth will have no floor at all... I did have one which started out as the 1600cc Victor and ended up with a 350 Chevy V8 in it and that was a tremendous transformaton but like a twit of the first order I sold it "just needing a few finishing touches" as I'd "spent too much on it already, I'm spending no more" and needed to find some cash to pay a couple of bills.... IDIOT. So I'd thought of going for a Supra Turbo motor in this one but not sure if that would be manly enough?
Either way it has to wait till maybe over winter.

I don't care if you are a Werewolf, what a great collection of cars!
Shame about the rot in the Plymouth. Nothing worse than that heart sinking moment when you find rot in what you thought was a pretty solid car.

Did a bit more yesterday, just having a cup of tea and I'm out to do some more. Mostly sanding bits down, refilling a bit like the rear wheelarch one side and trying to prep up the front panel. Also wafted some No1 primer ontot the radiator support/fan shroud. Then Leigh turned up with his Herald for some Stereo fitting fun. Here's the happy chappy He loves having his photo taken.... ....not Right, back out to it and see if I can get the flamin thing ready for primer and maybe even get some on. Not looking too promicing as I have to be at the parents' this afternoon.

LOL, I've got visions of you two crawling up suburban streets with prints from the forum in hand and a Sherlock Holmes hat on now LOL.
Where did you think I was? I'll tell youhow warm you are!
Andy, I know I know I know I know. Kelvin saw the white car at the NEC last November and rang me up specially to tell me I was a "prize c**t of the first degree to sell that" and "if you saw it now you'd puke your guts up". Now runs a T700R4 which is a lot more friendly to those gears (4.1s or 3.9s I forget now, but with 13" rims it was hella gearing issues for crusing speeds...)
Bah. I think I'll just run the straight 6 POS until I can get a proper motor in it. Problem I have with the Chevy is last time I needed to get custom headers made to clear the steering column and I'd rather avoid the expense again. If you know of anything which will fit off the shelf let me know. Also I'd like to run a heater and the distributor on the SBC fouls the air mixing flap and housing bit. I'd thought SBF or even Buick as they have a front dizzy and are both slighly narrower then the SBC, so I might be able to run a manifold/downpipe past the column OK. Maybe....

Maybe.... i was parked next to it and i thought it looked good to be fair.....lol SBF has everything you could wish for to fit into a Ventora....apart from firstly it's a f**d,and more to the point the sump has a front hump instead of a rear one...dizzy is in the front, shorty headers exit at the back of the engine, really narrow block,C4(small and light) and AOD fit directly on to it,it'll make as much power as a Chevy(except it costs more),you can pick up 302's and C4 combos at good money these days, probably even get the heater to fit(just).....go get the cheque book out and relive your dream..lol

Yeah, my chequebook is hiding from me these days... I think the Fox platform has a rear hump sump. But I know what you mean about it being F**d in a Vauxhall, at least the Buick is GM... I have the LeSabre parked next to the Ventora in the garage and it looks a reasonable size to fit... Excuse to go to a 425 nailhead in the LeSabre as well LOL. I think probably SBC 350 is the way to go for common parts really, backed with a 200R4, should fit nice in the tunnel being quite narrow and they have a nice deep first gear too.... Although I was thinking of a manual. Bah, you've got me started again... headers are still the issue, and the dizzy... guz, you're cold. Go south....
