Being a stinking stoodent i get my loan in a few weeks, and have decided as well as getting a lower strut brace for my mk1 i want to lower her too. Currently i think she is as standard gti ride height, but i was wondering what springs are available and recommended?! I don't wanna go too low as i live in the country and have to deal with far too many pot holes (and my drive is evil). Coilovers would be sweet, but i cant really afford them. Also would i have to replace the shocks with some lowering springs?

Was also wondering if lowering the front more than th rear would affect the handling, cos i think it would look sweet....

That looks top quality. I had T/A koni's on mine and it rode perfectly on country roads. A friend put a cheapo kit on his MK1 and hated it, then upgraded to T/A koni's. Save yourself £150.

Horses for courses, old boy.
If you want a quick fix, then go for it.
Otherwise keep saving, I suppose.

Stu might know what they are, cos I bought my Golf off him, but mine has 30mm lower springs on it. Not anything LIKE low enough IMO, but noticeably lower than stock, AND I can get over the humps in our road OK Looks kinda Baja-esque next to these though:

Should be able to pick up some -30mm or -40mm springs for 30 quid-odd from the usual forums (CGTI, No-Rice, etc) - I have sold two pairs for that much anyway... People (including me) reckon that the Boge dampers from GSF are pretty good for the money. Having said all that I have just bought Koni top adjustables and Eibach springs ;D

Can't remember now! I've got coilovers on my Mk1 and they allow you to go stupidly low if you want, think they are Supersport. To be honest it depends on whether you're lowering for looks or performance, coilovers are probably overkill unless you want sump scraping, CV joint killing super lowness and that's no good on a daily driver really. ;D

Coilovers are great but who can seriously be arsed to raise it and lower it again. I bought a fixed lowering kit from fk a german company and front lowering spring caps and think it looks sweet. would have liked it lower but its 50mm at front cos caps lower 10mm and 40mm at rear. compared to my mates(same set up) his tyres are further in his arches but is running 14" p's on 185/60 r14 tyres I'm running 14" steels on 195/45 R14 and have a 20mm from tyre to arch lip.

Venom Motorsport do a wide range of kits at decent prices, and Richard will be able to tell you exactly what you need. Have a look in the back of PVW, or on the website
