There are the car cruises at Old Town, Kissimmee, Orlando Several of these happen each week, the best night is Saturday which is pre-80s I believe, so it's full of hot rods and muscle cars. I've been a few times and the cars are great! ![](http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v55/robjobuk/Florida%20Cruise/200810218.jpg) ![](http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v55/robjobuk/Florida%20Cruise/200810159.jpg) Full album here... smg.photobucket.com/albums/v55/robjobuk/Florida%20Cruise/

Do not trust googlemaps when it gives you driving times. To give you an idea, Atlanta to New Orleans, taking 20 to 59 in one shot is about 9-10 hours of driving... and 59 from Birmingham to Hattiesburg is a whole lotta nuthin' unless you love staring at trees. Note also for your trip that if you're in GA or AL Sunday is a no-go day as everywhere pretty much shuts for everyone to go to church. Took a weekend trip to Birmingham and the entire place was a ghost town on Sunday until about 1pm and then a lot of places were shut. The weather is unpredictable. Especially inland, rain starts like it's being operated via a lightswitch. Umbrellas can help. That said it's a pretty drive and the locals are friendly. Take care driving through AL because it's not law there to have insurance for driving your car. Get into a wreck and the paperwork is so much fun, especially in a rental. Get the largest, squidgiest car you can, that's a lot of ass-in-driving-seat time ![:)](//storage.proboards.com/forum/images/smiley/smiley.png) The weather's beginning to cool off now but don't forget the sunblock and a hat. And the bug spray. That's important, especially if you're planning on being outside after dusk, in FL and LA the bugs looooove tourists. Local tip- avoid wearing cologne, just wear deodorant. The bitey bugs are attracted to colognes like you wouldn't believe, so small you can't see them and the bites they give ya itch for weeks. Slap on the bug repellant and you'll thank me for that advice ![:)](//storage.proboards.com/forum/images/smiley/smiley.png) Yah, I've lived in the south for a while now. ![:D](//storage.proboards.com/forum/images/smiley/grin.png) There's a small car scene in New Orleans area, I'm not sure what's going on in October but Hammond, Destrahan, etc on the Mississippi road tend to have a few local get-togethers and car shows. St. Joseph Plantation often holds them. Only little but the turnout's usually good. 209.62.216.33/photos/stjoseph/ << A few shots I took a couple years back there Phone ahead of time to check the places are open. That's important. Speak slowly. Y'all's accents are funny and hard to unnerstand, y'hear? --Phil
