It's a special GRP estate roof and tailgate made to replace the standard one. Apparently they were mildly popular before Volvo filed a complaint and it got shut down (they felt that if you wanted an estate 4-series you should have bought a 480).

Conversion from a Belgian company (Toncar aka EBS). They offered a conversion for the Seat Toledo and IRC for the Renault 25 too.

EBS did even one or two Volvo 480 cabrios after Volvo's own project was cancelled.
Volvo also did a prototype of a real estate based on the 460, never seen a pic though.

Not sure on the 440 estate, but it's different
Do like that 3 series estate tho, has the roof been raised or is it my eyes?

Forget the estate, I've never even seen or heard of a 4 series Volvo before! I thought they went straight from the 244 to the 740. You learn something every day.
Edit: Apparently the 4-series are smaller, following on from the 340. I don't think we ever got the small Volvos in Australia.

It was a FWD replacement for the 3-series, based on the 480 I believe. They weren't very good but weren't terrible and were exetremely dull in general. Nothing interesting about them at all.

They're exactly as Adam says and I have one for sale, it's ok although I'm not sure if it's up for a road trip from Finland to Australia ;-) A French company did the same estate hatch thing for the 309 but this was also blocked by Peugeot.

But some how manages to fly thru every mot with no issues... Even if it does struggle to start everymorning and when it does its in a cloud of smoke lol

I've seen a 740 pass twice in a row (our NCT is 2 years between tests, though going down to 1 soon) when it was proper knackered

the 300 series estate looks like a proper car rather than a conversion i think (i know its a conversion, it just seems to suit it really well)

I love obscure estate conversions! Imagine how cool that 440 would look slammed and rimmed!
Sorry to diversify slightly, but last time I googled I couldn't find any pics of the original Swedish market Saab 900 estate - anyone got a photo?
