I realised how few older cars are on the road! I spotted the following ones over a 17 mile motorway and urban run; h-reg 760 estate e-ref accord coupe j-reg xm hatch l-reg GM saab 900 coupe P-reg xj6/8 saloon f-reg 240gl estate j-reg carina hatch and a pant wettingly cool maserati 228. ;D Now that is a few cars, but in half an hour of driving, I reckon that less than 1 in 50 cars were older than 9! WTF?!?! I can understand if they were good cars like a lotus elise or an audi A8, but in the main they are all sh!te euroboxes with the imagination of a bin-man from Doncaster. Just imagine if the roads were full of retro saloons for the masses, how great would that be... ;D BB

It's already scary how few people drive around in cars with the old prefix plates, an awful lot of what you see is '51' etc onwards. The Joe average family car is now something like S-plate onwards. Elises far too common round here, as I'm not far from Hethel.
I completely fail to understand the ludicrous mentality of continually replacing one dull car with a slightly newer one (and the moneywasting that goes with it). Our family-car Carina E is now 10 years old but it's safe, reliable, economical and roomy and will remain perfactly adequate for our needs so why change it? I'd be quite happy if we still had it in 10+ years' time.
Did at least see a very tidy red Merc estate this morning, about 83-84.
I only ever use retro stuff for getting to work, 240K's turn today.

I try and remember what i see and forget but there was a gold early Volvo 260 this morning. It is sad that theres not more old motors, but i can't help wishing the GF would hurry up pass her test, get a FT job, and buy a smart fortwo! so i can save a bit on petrol and rust! don't forget theres a lot of second cars in garages and under tap, not spoilt in the rush hour. The sad reality is, for a majority of road users, the car is just an over grown white goods/ mod con, cos the Public Transport is curse word and fails to meet their needs, and its a long time since i got on/saw a bus to Asda! Roads would be better and more interesting if PT was better run, and there'd be less nuggets and Sunday drivers! cant wait for the CARS convoy

it doesn't matter if it's a Morris Marina or a Toyota Celica - it's what you do with it that counts

I think that's why we're all here - we're a minority who love driving something that's not "the norm". There are fewer and fewer old cars on the road, and it is amazing how many people are sucked into the treadmill of getting a new car every 2-3 years or whatever. However, I think if people like that (i.e.: those who see cars as just another domestic appliance) did drive older cars, our scene would be worse off because of it. For one, we wouldn't have the exclusivity that comes with driving something out of the ordinary. Plus, the people who just use a car as a means of transport to and from work and to Asda would end up destroying an old car - doing zero mainenance on it and such. As long as there are people like us around, the classic / retro scene will be thriving for many years to come

Nigel, we are off to Canada for a month on the 25th, but I have no job lined up for my return (a cunning ploy to get the Benz a bouncing!), so will give you a bell about welding up your yellow 240k as soon as we get back. Weather should be dandy by then too!

Weather should be dandy by then too! Waahey! I've got all the service parts, so all being well that's another retro J-car patrolling the mean streets of South Norfolk. I'll PM you, wanted to get in touch about one or two things anyway. I think BenzBoy is right about the exclusivity (inverted snobbery?!) of our cars. Other day some guy in a shop came out and chatted with me about mine, he'd seen me driving past for the last six years in a succession of old J-stuff on the way to work. Makes the effort and hassle worthwhile.

I've started noticing this too, when commuting in the micra to work i rarely see anything older than it, i just get odd looks from people in 02'reg citroens etc When i was at college 2/3 years ago most cars in the car park ranged from E to l/m reg, go in to the same car park now all the (students) cars are 51' onwards.

Saw an F-plate Renault 9 (late for one of them?) and an H-plate Senator at lunchtime.
More interestingly, a smart red 100E 4dr on slot-mags with silver outline flames went past earlier. The real basic model with tiny rear lights. New one to me round here.

oldest thing I've seen today is Reliant Kitten in works car park. Went and talked to the old boy owner and gave him my phone number in case it comes up for sale.

What I hate is the idea that buying a used, but mint condition and absolute top spec car outright in cash (from a dealer or personal sale) is seen as worse than getting a poverty spec bottom of the line Vauxhall clunker on finance with a 55 plate.
The used car market is such great value in this country, it baffles me as to why anyone would want to pay through the nose for a base spec finance jobby when they could get one 5 years old and much better specification for a fraction of the cost.
But no, all old cars break down and are unreliable etc etc etc. I've had my T-reg Mira (which people have called "quite an old car", what?!) as a daily driver for a year and can count the number of problems I've had on one finger, one time the plastic cover on a door lock came off, so I had to pick it up and screw it back on by hand. I just knew at that point I'd have been much better getting a brand new Corsa Envoy at something or other a month, I mean who needs rev counters, or radios. Or seats.

Or seats. i know that feeling all to well,i bought an ex-demo top spec polo with all the toys ,and on average it went back to vw once a month for all sorts of probs, the rear washer pipe detached itself and filled the tailgate lock with water, which in turn cocked up the alarm, the cam belt and tensioner had to be replaced and after 12 months they still hadnt sorted out the itermitant loss of power, and that was looked at by 3 different vw dealers.i bought a 3y/o 92 passat which has done 165k is old it to my dad,he gave it to my cuz and its still going strong and has nenver ever broken down.

I spotted a very nice green Citroen SM on the Embankment in London today and followed a couple of Daimler limos and a hearse, all in white up the M4

i'd love a new company car, for the 'jump in and drive off on holiday and don't worry about anything' aspect but i'd never, ever, ever buy a new car.
Autotrader - 02 '51 Mondeo 2.0 Ghia, high motorway miles, £2750 Autotrader - 04 '54 Mondeo 2.0 LX, 12,000 miles. £6950 Ford - 06 '06 Mondeo 2.0 LX, delivery mileage, £16495
Ten grand lost in 18 months, or £14k in four years. Why would you do that? Why would you get stuck in the loop? Our mongdeo is 9 years old, worth about the same as a decent washing machine, but it does the job perfectly. And i didn't cry like a girl when i scraped it down a trolley bay, like i would have done on a £16k car.

Why then do I have a new co car (93 TiD) and covet just about every smoker that is older than 10 yrs? It broke my heart when I realised that running a '93 480 2.0i ES was less cost effective than a 6month old Audi A2, doing 20k miles per year... I intend to be out of the loop soon, though, and put some cash towards a little 3 yr old norfolk number... BB

LOL They are not bad really, last ok and seem reliable, and cheap to get at at the mo for a realistic daily, also the mk1's look 90's very retro now. GF's parents just chopped in their R reg mongdeo for a T reg Focus Ghia, to the tune of garage prices and an 12.9% loan of their helpful bankers. They wouldn't of listened to us, I don't see the point, its just a bit smarter. they could of had a mint sierra for 1k, logical step backwards though. If i'd been them I admit i'd of been tempted by a new Fiesta deal, it wouldn't of cost much more.
