I didn't think the steels could be improved upon but I was wrong, those Schmidts are so right it hurts. I'm not knocking the shiny black one but for me yours looks the better.Loving it.

That CD player repair job is a brilliant story - I share your frustration in being unable to find people to fix old things. I needed some cleaning/repairs to an OEM Mazda tapedeck which had ripped apart an old tape, couldn't find anyone who would do it, even though I was completely prepared to pay proper money for the job. Only a fairly ordinary Clarion, but I didn't want to replace it as it matches the dash cluster. In the end I had to learn how to do it myself, managed to get Side B playback back at least. Still looking out for someone to fix it "proper" though. I love old high-end technology, something which retailed for a fortune in the day will always look superb and feel like a quality item when you use it. Make sure you get a matching graphic equalizer for it, those Alpines look superb stacked up!

More great stuff Bruce, and photos - the night time shots are super sharp. As much as I liked the steels, the schmidts look so right on this that they hurt!

Fantastic story on the headunit fix. The polish guy is my new hero!
Mx5 looking sick! You keeping the modern lines silver or going for an off the wall colour change??

Make sure you get a matching graphic equalizer for it, those Alpines look superb stacked up! Funny you should mention that - I was looking around for one of these (but with the sliders) to compliment the head unit, but decided I'd rather keep the look in the dashboard as simple as possible which I guess is one of the reasons for hiding the active crossover network in the glovebox. If one does come up though, I might be tempted to buy it 'just because' and maybe use it with the 5980 in something else? Good work on fixing your own stereo - I wish I had the balls to have done that on my Alpine, but having got as far as removing the cover/lid and seeing how complex the changer mechanism is, and how buried everything else is inside the changer mechanism....I just put the lid back on, cried a little inside and rang Rich.

You keeping the modern lines silver or going for an off the wall colour change?? Silver. I'm not into anything too mad and doubt I could carry it off without the car starting to look a bit 'scene' and I'm certainly not unhappy with the finish on the wheels. It's a shadow chrome finish which I was worried would look tacky, but when I actually picked the wheels up from the seller, I fell in love with the finish. It really works....more so in the flesh. I'm pretty happy with the overall look of the car at the moment. There are some changes planned, but they won't be anything visually massive. Some may not even work, I have some doubts, but I will try them out anyway and hope they do work. If they do, they will stay, but if not then it won't be too difficult to put that car back to how it is now. If I don't try them then I feel I have failed to keep this car heading in the direction I want it to go. While I am here...and following on from my last photos: At this point I figured it was nearly midnight, so maybe time to go home.... Errr.....yeah. This never really happened! Instead, I found myself elsewhere around Bristol docks This is a location that, by sheer accident, got me one of my all time fave shots. My Delica with the police horse passing by. I thought it was time to revisit....although the light was low and with no tripod, this was the best/least blurry shot I could get hand held. I will be heading back there soon with a tripod to nail this shot Just around the corner (this location is thanks to Butterz) As you can probably guess, I had decided that bed could wait. More shots to come....

So come on then, tell me that i'm the only one that since reading this has gone off to look for an mx5 on ebay and the like, I know i'm certainly guilty as charged! Just do it, you really won't regret it. ;D When my lottery numbers come up, I'm commissioning you to build Dirtbag III II for me. Deal? *cough* corrected for you Don't forget, this is still 'the' Teenage Dirtbag. Might be a different car than the one I originally bought, but the name is about the end result and the process of gettitng there on a tight budget, not the physical car it was applied to from the outset. I guess a little bit like in Batman Forever. Even though Val Kilmer replaced Michael Keaton, he was still Batman, not Batman II ;D I'd be happy to build you a car Dan. Any day.

It'd cost a Euro Millions win to pay for Bruce's labour . It's a shame that perfect attention to detail such as how Bruce works on his own cars doesn't translate into a business. I'm doing a lot of amp/sub wiring for people at the minute and i'd love for somebody to have the money for me to doing a super neat job like Bruce has, but as it is for the money i'm getting i've got 2 hours max to chuck the lot in and get it working otherwise its not worth my time. I'm LOL-ing at the image of a customer coming to pick their car up with a bill for 3 days labour at £40 an hour for a stereo wiring up. That will be 1500 quid sir haha. I've gone off on one now, but really the hardest bit of modifying cars as a business is getting the balance right between perfection and time. Matt

What a story about the headunit! It looks proper nice on those wheels too, at first I wondered why you'd swapped them for the steels, but now I see it

I thought I had a good idea of the work gone into this thing, seeing it progress a little more every time I saw it, I was impressed with what I had seen... Until I saw this thread! I had no idea about all the little details and the thought behind them! Just amazing. I love this car. This image really does it for me though, part built and already looking hard as nails Well done Bruce. You've built (another) truly awesome car.

Damn that is looking mental on the schmidts. I was loving the matt paint with the steels and thought that the schmidts wouldnt look that good with the satin paint, but i was soooo wrong!!!
Also loving the photography, really makes me want to go out in the sierra and take some shots as havnt taken any proper ones yet! lol

.....really makes me want to go out in the sierra and take some shots as havnt taken any proper ones yet! lol It's not often that I find time to head out with the camera myself, so while I was out on the road with no Jed to worry about, camera in hand and the weather on my side, it seemed almost wrong to think of heading home. I just wish I had the tripod with me so that I could have kept the ISO a lot lower which would have improved the IQ quite a bit. Next time for sure.

I'll say no more for now, but let's just say that there are some very, VERY kind people out there. Watch this space.......

Wheels look perfect mate, indeed this has to be the car of the year so far for me. And as always some great shots as well. Really must dust my camera off and get some proper shots of mine. Too easy just to keep using the phone
