Okay follow my thinking here... Alfa Sud + Alfa 33 1.7 (green) Cloverleaf engine + Alfa 33 P4 or Sportswagen running gear = 4WD 1.7 AlfaSud. This has been a long term plan of mine to build at some point. Now I'm wondering can you perminantly set the bias on a 4WD set up to only power the rear wheels?? RWD Alfasud?

Surely half the point of an alfasud is its legendary FWD handling characteristics.

Yeah but if you're going to go for silly power you end up having problems getting that power through the tyres and onto the road with FWD.
You CAN get it down but there is a lot of super tricky suspension geometry setup involved.

sounds like a load of needless grief to me! Just get a 1186cc 'sud and give it some low-power welly round those back roads, lovely job.

Bah thats no fun... think of it this way, you could apply the same principle to other cars that had a 4WD but no RWD varient...

The rear diffs on most fwd - 4wd cars are nowhere near being up to taking full torque The majority of them are done with a Hang on centre diff which only splits torque to the rear when the front loses grip. As soon as the front stops slipping they go FWD again Safe.... but not a lot of fun, and you have to really provoke them to get them to slide If you are going to RWD then do it properly

If you are going to RWD then do it properly True true... thing is, there isn't anything obvious to use as a source of parts. I guess that may be why its not a common thing to do

Yup .. I guess you could got 75 rear end, but I suspect with the difference in size of cars that would be a whole world of pain...

Not to mention the Rear Transaxle ;D Early 105 series gearbox perhaps to something like a freelander rear diff, small and light but able to take moderate power What sort of HP / Torque are you talking about ? BMW diffs are heavy but strong, scooby diff is a nice unit

you could perhaps use this principle on other cars too, golf syncro perhaps, using audi engine longitudenly(sp) and a 924 trans axle?

There was a Mk2 Jetta in PVW magazine a few months ago that was running a 20v turbo engine and syncro system but with only the rear wheels driven as I recall. Effectively a high powered RWD Mk2 Jetta... ideal! ;D

Syncro is a hang on system, I have got one of those ;D So it requires front wheel slip for it to transmit torque to the rear wheels The Transfer box is a weak point as well The HAldex system as used in the TT would be a better bet, diff is stronger and so is the box and transfer box, which is probably what they used

hmm, I find the sud lift off oversteers very nicely as standard thank you... LOL, I'm an RWD fanatic as well. if you want RWD then buy yourself an S13, an S14, a MKI or II Scort, a Shovitt, a Skoda, any Beemer... you'll be wanting an LSD as well which cuts your choices down to S13, S14, MKI or II Scort with expensive diff, shovitt with some mad diff bodged onto it or top end Beemer, 325sport+...
