It costs very little extra in the US to get a "personal" plate and you can have pretty much whatever you like as no-one else in the same state has it. So he might have got it registered using the same reg as the number it last had in this country and is running around using the original plate. I expect its much the same as using a US style plate over here - not particularly legal but you can get away with it a lot of the time. I think quite a few of the "anglophiles" do this.

Well, on the Mini its an odd one.
I thought that in order to import a Mini into the USA it has to be a pre-1973 one or it will not pass emissions tests, impact assessment (has to have sprung or rubber bumpers) and a bunch of other reasons. Hense a lot of the exporters send out 80s Minis on a VIN plate from a '72 or earlier car. ALthough it does appear to have a clear title so, I dunno...
In the USA you have to run state produced licenece plates showing current DMV tag, not like in the UK where you can run plates made by an accessory shop/Halfords/yourself.
I'm not sure that car could be registered in the USA, or it may do what a number of Brit cars I've seen do which is to have the US licence plate attached with bungees over the old UK registration plate and they take the US plates off at shows etc. Note there is no number plate on the front at all...
The Rover Sterling was sold int he US as a last ditch attempt to sell Rover there. They sold badly and warranty problems crippled the Rover-USA company.

not pre-73, i 'think' its gotta be over 25 years old, rolling dates.
mate of mine rebuilds and sells/ships minis to the US, i'll ask him. (posts as Nottingham Phil on forums)

It might vary state to state, but Arnold Schwartzeneger cetainly has ended the rolling excepmtion for smog testing for cars in California. Its pegged at 1973 or 1974.

I thought it was 1978 as the cut off for non conforming imports, but was more interested in the reg!

Calif. is the only state that has a pre '73 import date, (Arnie is a c0ck IMHO), you can't take an imported car there legally if built/registered after then and run it on Calif. plates. all other US states are on the rolling 25 year system, so owt built before '81 is fine ATM. my mate tells me that most of his customers ask for the UK plates to stay put and the US plates are added as well rather than replaced, UK plates are pretty much show plates and don't need to be removed, having both is fine. no doubt the mini owner has removed the US plates for the auction, or it might not be registered ATM.

I thought it was 1978 as the cut off for non conforming imports, but was more interested in the reg! With those pics, there's no proof it is actually driven with only that plate. Legally it would need the proper state/provincial plates. I Illinois that would be front AND back

I've seen ropey Moggies fetch good money over there. There was a convertible rolling shell sold for like $3000 a while back...
