Really want to get rid of the standard engine in my moggie, but unsure of what engine I should go for - ideally I don't really want to be chopping/cutting the car around that much.
any thoughts, beside the usual 1275, Zetec, etc

Fiat twincam.Its a well documented swap.Engines aren,t that difficult to get hold of but spares for them can be tricky.My moggies getting a 2Ltr twincam.Paid £250 for engine,gearbox,propshaft and all bits needed for swap.

Really depends on what your priorities are? Reliability? Power? Torque? Affordability? Tunability? Cost?
Anything can and has been fitted into a Minor in the past.

Remember, the A-series engine was produced for over 50 years, so if you want a more straightforward swap you could just get an A+ engine, or even an SPI A-series engine from a late 90's Mini (the real one, not the BMW one). You'd still have to uprate the running gear, but then you'd have to anyway with a Twink.

very cheap alternative engine is Sierra/granada 2.0 8v twin cam, loads of torque, reliable and donor cars are stupid cheap.
The fuel injection mini engine would be pretty cool though too, like a nice modernisation of the original. Or maybe a metro turbo engine?

The Minor engine bay is very wide and deep, but not very long. Zetec and K series won't fit without cutting. Fiat Twincam officially needs front crossmember 'adjustment', but I have a theory that with careful measurement you might be able to avoid this. Ford X-flow will fit without cutting as long as you use a remote oil filter. PPC did a 'how-to' on this a while back. If you're prepared to swap afew bits about (pulleys/water pump etc.) then a Toyota 4AGE will fit without cutting. PPC featured a traveller with this in a while back. It all depends how much power you want, how much work you want to do, and the budget of course.

Saab turbo engine…
Mates to a Carlton/Omega box or a type-9 with a xe bellhousing adaptor
Cheap can pick a whole running 9000 turbo up for £300 with clinging to tax and test
Engines are strong and chain driven with forged pistons as standard
Anything from 170 to 225 bhp depending on donor car, scope for 300+ bhp easily
Heavy-ish engine, parts arnt that cheap, you'll need to get made or make a RWD sump.

To get a standard A40 this low, you'd have to dig a hole to put it in

What about......
Fitting a modern BMW twin cam head onto a 1275cc A series? Believe it or not it's not that difficult a project to do as the head by amazing fluke almost fits perfectly with minimal machining! there's a youtube clip of a mini clubman that's been converted that makes for extremely entertaining viewing

^^^ yeah, can be VERY expensive! Only about three holes are in the correct place! Block needs oil, water, pushrod and bolt holes moving/blanking and ideally the bores need offset boring... and that's just for starters! Fiat twink, as mentioned, is well documented and proven - although these must be starting to get scarce in good gondition these days and, as with much Italian stuff of the era, spares are also drying up. Edit: Just found this thread on the 16v head conversion - there's even more to it than I remembered! the opening gambit.... from here www.16vminiclub.com/forums/showthread.php?t=7850MPi block. Deck completely plugged off for dry deck head assembly, using brass plugs and steel where new stud holes intersect. All new stud locations now have plugs fitted to ensure perfect full form threads. Offset bored to line up cylinders perfectly center to center with the BMW head. Stud holes drilled and tapped to move the head forward on the block to line up the combustion chambers centrally over the cylinders. All that done on CNC to CAD drawings, so Perfect! Steel liners fitted to return bore to standard 70.61mm and 1275cc. Block skimmed so pistons sit flush with the deck. Four bolt main cap fitted, line bored and honed. Crank case machined for clearance of steel h section conrods. Under CROWN piston oil cooling jets fitted. Core plugs have 'safety' retention screws fitted, Probibly not nescisary but it looks cool Holes drilled and tapped into old tappet chest for oil drains for both head and the turbo in the very near future Engine/ Gearbox bolts enlarged to M8. Head modified as per normal plus all coolant passages welded up for dry deck assembly, adapters welded on back end for coolant and oil drain Crankshaft Wedged, Bladed, cross drilled, Toughened, balanced to the nth degree. Steel h section conrods modified to give propper clearance on little end with pistons due to the offset bore. Hepolite 19320 Powermax Cooper S pistons machined for valve clearance. Total Seal gapless piston rings. Teflon buttons fitted to prevent fully floating wrist pins scuffing the bore. MPi cam shaft machined to remove all lobes except the cam sensor lobe Ultra light flywheel and backplate, orange diaphragm, and AP racing organic friction plate.

If you don't want to go too fast, the perfect swap for them is the Datsun A-series, which bolts straight in and is basically a BMC A-series which Datsun stole ("was inspired by") and then improved and upgraded. They were available from 1000-1500cc over the years and produced up to 85hp in stock trim, or more with some tuning. They're still a pretty popular choice for Minors here in Australia, but that may be because we have more Datsun engines readily available than the Morris A-series. en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Nissan_A_engine
