Well, as predicted the Volvo failed the MOT. Not quite as spectacularly as feared. Here's the damage:
N/S front headlamp switch faulty - Don't quite know what he means by this. Probably the flasher unit playing up again...
N/S front track rod end ball joint has excessive play - Just hope it hasn't seized on
N/S front shock absorber has an excessively worn linkage - Linkage? Does he mean rubber mount? Who knows?
O/S rear camp exhaust system has a part missing - (I assume he meant clamp). Great. Rust in my eyes, that's what I wanted...
N/S front brake hose seriously damaged (found during steering lock-to-lock check) - Knew about this one
O/S front brake hose ferrule excessively corroded - Knew about this one too.
So, not all that bad really. Just need to fix it as cheaply as possible... now, where's my cowboy outfit?...

I know. What the fudge is he on about?! Problem is the garage I took it to don't do the MOT themselves, they send it some place else. So I couldn't ask the guy what he was on with I suppose I'll have to get it in bits and have a butchers.

Does it have drop links to the anti roll bar - my money would be on that - normally fixed to the suspension leg at one point and to the roll bar on another Rose joint at each end and often very sloppy Quick fix replace Or remove roll bar and both links for interesting handling but MOT pass ;D

Can you remove things for the re-test and get a pass?!

Have you got a hand written fail sheet or one of the new computerised ones. Problem with the computerised ones is they have to select from the options available and more often than not the tester chooses the most likely to him which might not always seem the same to you when you read it. My dads ZX just failed for "rear anti roll bar has excessive wear in a ball joint " after checking the car over I found it was actually the front anti roll bar droplink. I am guessing you are right and it will be a droplink but from reading that I would have thought the linkage would be the shock absorber bush but if its mcpherson strut (which I presume it is) it wont have one

Yeah it's the dumb new computrified sheets. They do have ref. numbers next to them so I'm assuming that will refer to a part of the test in the book (like on mot-uk website)? Or am I talking bobbins?! For instance the one next to the shock absorber fail has [2.7.4] It's a MacP strut set-up, so I reckon it is probably the drop link like bstardchild said. If they'll pass something that isn't there any more on a re-test I'll just take it off. The ride's like a tug-boat on rough seas at the minute, god knows what it'll be like without an ARB! Reasons to be happy: there's no welding to do, and it passed the emissions test Oh, and most of the work is around the nsf wheel. Makes it easier seeing as I'm working in the street at the moment!

Taken from german and swedish website. If its one of those you might as well just get that rather than remove the full anti roll bar.

not tre bad then, which garage did you take it to? It's a garage near Somerfield in the town centre - not sure what it's called but they had a sign with "Classics enthusiasts" on it which made me think that it would be OK. The actual MOT test was done somewhere else though (I didn't know this when I booked it) PhoenixC - cheers for looking that up! For that money I might as well stick an ARB link kit on it. Don't really fancy taking the ARB off and then re-fitting it after. That's if the fail is referring to the drop link... it's the only joint I can think of near there, except the top and bottom mounts for the strut but they're not exactly "linkages". This being Cornwall I'll probably have to travel 189 miles to find the nearest GSF! ;D
