Really they were a bit ahead of their time, in a bad way for us, but potentially in a 'good way' for the punters of the time. It had trendy and arguably safer FWD, wierd rounded shape, hatch back and flattening seats, think MPV style. Like DarrenW said the later models from BL/AR were a bit strange, like trying despirately to flog the old tat, taking off the chrome, adding matt black, plactic silver wheel trims, badges, urrgh and generally making look a bit cheaper IMO. However, its just makes the late more special now to us retro pervs! I think there is potential...

it doesn't matter if it's a Morris Marina or a Toyota Celica - it's what you do with it that counts

Theres a chance the 1750 engine shares the same gearbox stud pattern as the later O-series, and cheap MG Montego turbo engines are still out there - or O series derived T16's and M16's are also in adequate supply at low prices. Aint gonna happen - the maxi power unit is like an overblown mini effort with the engine on top of the gearbox, so the engine bay is too narrow to get a conventional 'end-on' transverse set up installed. May be possible to do a 'spag' and somehow graft a different engine onto the existing gearbox/sump, not gonna be easy though, lots of machining. And a short lifespan if its a turbo - shared oil for engine/box/diff/turbo anyone? Yum. Stick with the standard engine, its nice and smooth, maxis are not meant to go fast anyway.

There's something that doesn't sit right about the shape of the Maxi... can't put my finger on it but it just isn't nice. I honestly can't think of anything that would make it look good. Nothing. Best bet is to just have it stock looking and just deal with the fact that it looks like it was designed by four brain-damaged chimpanzees on valium. But at least with a Turbo lump in you could drive so fast people wouldn't see what the hell it was...

O series derived T16's and M16's are also in adequate supply at low prices. Are they the ones that are in those Rover 620Turbos? I love those. Such a classy shape - a deffo future classic IMO. The T(urbo)16 is fitted to the 620turbo, note sure about the M16, they were defo fitted to the 800 series. I thought it was just me who liked the shape of 620's obviously not. , but useful to know
