My mate has a 1973 (I think!) VW Beetle- knowing it needed a little feetling in order to make it driveable. As a starting point he booked it in for the MOT.
In summary that the main issues are the steering, brakes and seatbelt mounting points corrosion. Problems highlighted are Steering Column play between shaft and steering wheel, Steering System tight? Nearside front steering system has a tyre fouling a part of the Vehicle, Steering lock incorrectly adjusted. Brakes: Master Cylinder brake pipe corroded and Brakes imbalanced Seat belt: Offside front lower seatbelt anchorage is excessively corroded.
So it doesn't seem like much but what do you guys reckon as to whether or not it's worth splashing the cash? Bearing in mind it will also need a full respray.
Personally I've seen worse but it seems the value of Beetles are fairly reasonable at the moment so is it a case of eBay it and buy a tidy one or fix this one up?
Any thoughts, rough estimates welcome as Beetles aren't my specialist chosen subject.
Cheers

It's a Jeans edition if that changes opinion but the interior will also need a tidy.

i don't think its that big a job, but then again i took on the 411 that had no floor and sills lol. i havent a clue on a price if a garage were to do the job, but if you don't want it i will take it off your hands. Always fancied a jeans beetle

It doesn't seem too bad and the previous owner seems to have spent his/her money on the engine so that appears to be running sweet but me and my mate are technical novices and were slightly perturbed by the MOT garage's suggestion that we give up now... probably the same kind of garage who would refer to my E30 M3 as just an 'old BMW' though so I took it with a pinch of salt.

I work in a small indepedent garage as a mechanic/MOT tester and to be frank a lot of the cars that come in to be repaired cost more than the cars value if it were to be sold. If the car has a use,and you like and enjoy it,and the car is repaired to a safe standard then I don't think the actual value of the car matters that much. I've spent far more on my Skodas then they are worth, and I don't begrudge a penny, simply cos I love 'em.

well the mounting for the seatbelt would be easy, unless the rust has spread through the B pillar or channel or floor. Which being a beetle wouldnt surprise me, but if the MoT man didnt pick up on it i presume its ok. if there is play in the steering check the tie rods and replace any knackered ones, the steering box itself also has adjustment on it so you might be able to dial it out from there. and the brakes are just a case of replacing knackered pipe and/or master cylinder. Bleed brakes and see how they are and go from there.

It seems that it does need a new steering box from what we could establish as there's a serious dead spot we couldn't dial out. I think the rubbing is just due to pattern wings being used and not properly adjusted.
Cheers to all.

the wheel rubs on the wing? i presume its lowered then?

Staggered set up- one side at the rear sticks out more than the other. I figured it might be a poorly adjusted pattern wing as the paint and seal looked fresh on that side... just a guess though.

what wheels are on it? I presume they arent stockers. There isnt a beetle on this earth that isnt staggered in this way, one wheel ALWAYS sticks out slightly more than the other, its like it from the factory. it could also be a pattern wing making things worse of course. just slam it, give it some massive negative camber, that will sort it out! ;D

Not sure what wheels they are- I'll sort out some pics tomorrow though and let you know. Look kinda like stockers without the centre discs but they are chrome- in my mind they are kind of Wolfrace slot mag style but not quite although I could be completely wrong!

master cylinder is a curse word to swap, easy with body off. easier with tank out to reach.
i'm after another bug project if its a reasonable distance away.
