well after a brief spell of unemployment (15months?) i've decided to step back into the world of the employed, job agency called today and ive got a job starting tomorrow with TNT doing something administrative.. obviously this post isnt about that...its more about my chosen method of transport to get there...its 18miles from doorstep to doorstep according to route planner...and its just occured to me the toyota supra will probably die in those 18miles, I'm very paranoid in general about catastrophic car death, and the fact my supra is kinda ropey adds to the fact, so i'm setting off extra early to try miss traffic and give myself chance to call home and get someone to give me a lift when i'm stranded on the side of the road...
reasons for this paranoid-ness are 1)timing belt thats not been changed in forever i think... 2)the lack of airfilter 3)the rate at which it burns oil 4)the fact any oil not burnt in the engine leaks out from a gasket and drops onto the fannymould,
also choosing a 2.8 straight 6 from the 80's isnt the best of ideas for an economical daily commute...so already thinking about buying another vehicle to add to the fleet. something super diesely and economical (this is the bit where you flood me with cool cheap cars that would be a reliable daily)
anyway i realise this post is pretty sh*tty and neither one thing or the other, but just feel like rantin on about how driving a sh*tter as an only car probably isnt always the best idea..

if i don't say it someone else will. Polo. ideal for local driving, not bad on M-ways, hugely economical, and mighty cool to boot. good luck with the new job

yeh i was thinking of something along the vw line of things, and i figured polo's and golfs cant be that bad on insurance either?
did they do diesel polo'age or suitable retro age? cos even if the petrol ones are super economical, i still quite fancy a diesel as i like the idea of being able to run it on biodiesel and all that stuff:)

i don't think polos come in diesel power, but I'm really not sure. insurance is usually well priced too. My old 1.3 golf was only £200/£300 when i was 23/24 and with zero no claims. lowpolovixen mentioned brentace in swansea who specialise in volkswagen, might be worth a quote from them. 01792 650933 i think

Although it may not fit your criteria entirely I've just purchased an N-plate 306 XSi... perhaps not the most retro of cars but on the right side of £1,500 and a reasonably modern and safe mode of transport with a bit of sparkle to the handling and it cost less to insure than our old Rover 100 1.1. Not sure what kind of value the diesels still command but they were always well regarded- 50-70mph faster than an Escort Cosworth IIRC.

You'd need a Golf for diesel power, right from MK1 versions with 1.6D engines, which grew over the years to 1.9 (not the TDi). The Audi 80/100 shared the engines.

all this talk of cars worth £1500 is a no no. i don't have that much to spend unfortunately...
i guess i'll be looking at golfs and such things in diesel format then... i'll have to see how much i can get one for.

Would normal advocate a Polo, but thats too obvious. There must be a 50 quid mk3 fiesta diesel in the local paper. It will burn as much oil as the supra, but if you forget to top it up... it wont stop. Ever.

cgi.ebay.co.uk/ws/eBayISAPI.dll?ViewItem&item=4628306008Job done. Ah curse word, you said diesel! Arg ;D Oh well, more pimping done. Schwing! May I suggest a 50 quid Peugeot 205 diesel off the Bay of E. It'll do ...50 to a gallon, keep you warm and probably only need a few odds and sods to keep trucking. Either that or a Granada 2.0 - lovely cars, really are.

i could fix the problems with supra yeh, but that wont change the fact its a bit of a gas guzzler and i drive it a bit like a nob (rush of blood to the head) and so fasr the fuel economy ive been getting hasnt exactly been great (avg'd around 20mpg so far).
i'm gonna have a nosey in the local ads this week see what is about thats cheap and diesel

I'd recommend a Pug 205 diesel (non-turbo) for economy - I bought mine for £70 (OK it had a hole in the roof and 256,000 miles on the clock but hey). It just kept going - never failed to start, does a ridiculous amount of mpg... not my kinda car, but it got me about! Congrats on the job btw

Maybe a Benz 240D (sluggish but hi-30's MPG) or even a 300TD if you can find one. ( similar MPG but a bit quicker) W123 series obviously (1980's models ) easy to hit with the slam stick, reliable and cheap.??

Peugeot 309 diesel.
Cost about 10p to buy, 4p to run. Super cheap with acres of room, and excellent handling. And they are mildly retro.

I concur with Blue850.... those Cav diesels are indestructible.
My brother in law has one with well over 200k on the clock, it's thoroughly thrashed & abused as a general hack, towcar, impromptu off-roader etc. and yet steadfastly refuses to break.
