My 850 thru a major strop last Sunday. Broke both bolts on the dynamo bracket which led to no fanbelts for waterpump/ overheating etc etc. This happened on a motorway out of Dublin ie huge fees for a tow truck but 3 humble cable ties allowed me to bodge dynamo back into place and get of said motorway and actually another 40 miles until help arrived in the form of a Skoda Octavia and a tow-rope. Cheers to the cable tie. and honourable mention to the 10R vise-grips as well!

Hooray for the cable tie! You know I grew up with stories of how my Dad used to get his custdomised Scania 111 artic lorry working again after a breakdown in the middle of nowhere using nothing but a box of cable ties, a big hammer and loads of swearing! I always though he was exaggerating, but I've seen photos, you can do amazing things with a cable tie and loads of swearing! PS it would have worked better if you had swore at the car!  Every time an Imp gives me bother I just whisper the word "scrapyard" and it sorts its self right out!!! ;D |

SWORE! The air was blue and the bloody dyanamo sits right beside the engine block so I still have blisters a week later.. and the fanbelt fell of if i went over 40mph which meant cutting cable ties to allow the dynamo to slacken and refit belt, ran out of cable ties after 40 miles and 3 stops!! Have now invested in reusable cable ties

Damn right about them cable ties....I got two on my Datsun attaching the front bumper to the brackets and they've been on their for 18 months and a MOT too....

i once used a pack of cable ties making an engine mount for a mk2 escort.
got me 200 miles.

It's cable ties that are stopping the dashboard on the '74 Imp from coming down and hitting me on the knees! I'll fix it soon enough! |

The handbrake cable guide tube on my GOlf caused me a major heart attack the day before the Retro Cars show. I'd changed the wheel bearing and must've loosened the guide tube from its retaining clip. 3 miles into testing the car out I hear "bang bang bang" every wheel revolution... Turns out the cable guide was rubbing against a wheel weight... One cable tie later kept it out of the way Seems the other side has been done in the past too! |

A friend of mine dropped his exhaust on his motorhome, he wrapped a 2 foot cable tie (which he was carrying with him!) in exhaust manifold wrap (which he also had!) and lashed the exhaust back on.
He is the kind of bloke who carries a 50 function multi-tool with him everywhere.

I've also got a cable tie holding the throttle linkage together on my Triumph 2000, its been there 14 months now.
Once drove the Fiat 90 miles with the clutch cable held on to the pedal with a vice-grips ( THE original mult-tool!!)
Repaired my brothers Wolseley Hornet's exhaust with a Coke can and two jubilee clips 60 miles from home, it was either that or strap the exhaust to the roof!!
There is something extremely satisfying about being able to get a broken down car moving with whatevers lying in the boot.

Another old classic 'repair job' is to use the windscreen washer motor as a lift-pump when the real fuel-pump breaks down. But then I'm sure you've all done that! Another old remedy I got from 'the ol' man'! It leaves lorries feeling a wee bit underpowered, and sparks a bit sometimes, but it'd work well on my Imp, the washer motors more powerful than the wee bloody engine, let alone the tiny lift-pump! |

Cable ties are indeed great !!! I've used them as exhaust mounts, bonnet catches, as handbrake cable mounts, even as part of the gear linkage in my A112  They are one of the three things that are essential for a retro car owner : cable ties, WD40 and a large hammer ;D |

Ah pity dafool that aint got no big-ass hammer!
Seriously though, the big hammer's a neccesity, it can repair bodywork, help get off seized on wheels when you have a puncture, and help to ward off carjackers! ;D

I did the London to Brighton mini run once with the bonnet held down with gaffer tape ;D There's nothing that stuff can't do................apart from make you more attractive to women ;D |

It can do that too! I just wrap some gaffer tape over their eyes and talk in a posh voice!
Also after this weekend I would vote for Plastic Padding too!
So what would you find inside every retro tool kit?
