I'm painting my '73 Audi 80 non-metallic gloss black and I want the sides/panels to be arrow straight. To achieve this I reckon I'll need a long sanding board. I've looked on ebay and the only ones available are from the USA and they're mad money. The local motor factors and Halfrauds only have the hand sanding blocks.
Do people make their own sanding boards and if so, from what? Timber seems too "rigid" for the subtle curves on the car.
Do you use paper off a roll or just lay up sheets edge to edge?
any other hints/tips on the matter?

I made one from 1/2" plywood, and used abrasive paper off the roll.
you can see the high and low spots when your sanding by using a long ruler on its edge. or you can wet the panel and look along the panel and see how the reflections move.

I made my own sanding block out of 1/2" plywood about 12" by 4" to fit half a sheet of wet and dry cut down the middle. It works an absolute treat, just I don't know how long the plywood will last getting wet, at least it didn't cost me anything ![:D](//storage.proboards.com/forum/images/smiley/grin.png)

I have the green flexible sanders from moggyman's recommendation and they are easily the best you can get for home use. The Klingspor paper they do works out cheaper than sheets and doesn't clog anywhere near as much. Use them!

I was mildly disappointed but I think thats due to the hype level they had been getting at the time. I also prefer 3M paper to the Klingspor stuff. You can get many of the 3M papers in rolls if you shop around usual bodyshop places. A lot of this is personal preference not exact science.
