I have an MX5 and it's growing on me. Not that fast in a straight line but it's fun. Bloody wallowy but I reckon it'll be a lot better once I've got it lowered. speaking of which, shouldn't that have been done on Tuesday? Got a message off the (clearly foreign) seller saying "Arrival for you will short after weekend". Got this on monday morning. That said, I've not got the clutch or HT leads I ordered at the same time on friday afternoon, from definitely english people. I'm enjoying the popup headlights, driving position, gearchange and handling. Not so much getting on with the visibility (back window is curse word, and rear quarter view also curse word). Wish I had an LSD.......

I'd say the MR-2 is a better looking car but the MX-5 is a safer choice. I haven't seen a Mk1 MR2 that isn't rusty and/or bodged for the sort of money you're wanting to spend.

Cheers for the great replies guys. To be honest I'm still struggling to believe that I'm about to embark on life without FAF!!! Oh well... At the moment I'm swaying more towards the mx5, but we shall see! Any other suggestions I should consider? Not got many options on this budget to be honest...

1989 Peugeot 205. You know, the one that was parked in a ditch on the campsite at RRG'17... the glass is always full. but the ratio of air to water may vary.

Haha. Right now, I'm embarrassed to be seen in the thing - It's still full hairdresser spec so I keep the top up when possible! Once it's sorted I'll re-consider....

MX5's are great fun Frank, had one Myself before Adam came along,if You buy an early one make sure You start it from cold when You go and view it lifters can wear out and it will smoke/miss for a few minutes from cold, not the end of the world but lifters are £16 each and You need 16!! Also check handbrake as rear calipers can sieze. I had an Import with the lsd and lowered suspension, only thing that would genuinely outhandle the Imp!!

Morning gurner! Well, sadly..... mx5s and mr2s are now out of the question. I've got a few months left on the classic insurance policy, and because I'm still classed as a young driver (22 years old) they won't insure me on either! So, back to a mk2 golf I think. Gotta find myself a 1.6, 20 year old mk2 golf. Got my eye on the one in the for sale section or another on the 'bay: Or should I just give the guy his petrol money and deposit back and keep the imp?! (Only joking if you're reading this Chris!!)

Money back and keep it, Frank.... honestly, you will regret it as shells like that are near impossible to find and you won't pay £500 for one that is as solid. Trust me.
MX5s and MR2s are cool as a penguins' nads... but a lot more expensive to buy/maintain/run than the Imp. Costs are important... no point having something shiney that you can't afford to insure/put petrol in. Been there...
Keep FAF, mate. Its probably the worst decision I've seen anyone make for a long time, buddy... and being a mate, I wouldn't lie to you. Think about it. :-)

I'm probably too late to this converstaion seeing as it looks like you've ruled them out I've owned four MR2 Mk1's and currently have an MX5. If I had to choose one based on daily use then a MK1 MR2 would be the choice for me. (would have to be the T-bar though) They are a hard top and targa top all in one, more secure and nicer (retroish/quirky) cabin than the MX5. Storage is much better too. Reliability they are pretty much on par. To drive they are pretty much on par...different in their own way, but both ride lovely, great fun and brilliant to throw around. With your budget I would choose the MX5. Even though I actually prefer the MR2, finding one that's not really rusty will be a challenge. Good ones will fetch £1,500>£2,500 yet you can pick up tidy, solid MX5's for around £600+. My MX5 cost me £375 and I have since spent about the same again fitting coilovers, sorting the niggles out (wheel bearings, brakes etc...) but it's still a cheap car that's an awful lot of fun. I like the whole convertible thing about the MX5 but not so keen on the fabric roof when its pssing down with rain. I know you can get hard tops but then they can be a bit of a faff to keep fitting/removing and also storing when the T-bar of the MR2 is all self contained....if it starts raining just pull over and 30 secs later you've got a hard top. They are both fun, they are both amazing vehicles and there will pretty much always be a 50/50 divide on what people prefer.....which just goes to show how good they both are. A few shots of one of my old MR2's and a few of my MX5:
